It doesn't show on the kindle because of course it's just in greyscale, but I totally got this book because of how cute and vibrant the colors of its cover were! No shame in that

i love this book!! simple tapi banyak lesson learnednya. magic and potion juga bikin makin seru! konfliknya ala anak umur 11-12 tahun gitu, bisa dibayangkan lah ya. oh dari buku ini juga banyak dapet kosakata bahasa baru! tagalog hahah kayak salamat itu thanks terus ada bubuhan po atau apo yang dipake buat memperhalus biar sopan gitu deh. had so much fun reading this book pokoknya, ada sedihnya dikit sih sampe basah sedikit mataku but all the problems are well solved!

I just finished the audiobook for SUGAR AND SPITE, and I recommend it highly! (This story is pitch-perfect middle-grade voice for my own 3rd-grade reader, and I can't wait to share it with her.)

Gail Villanueva's enemies to friends plot made this a compelling read, and this book is perfect for kids who feel they're struggling to connect with their peers or fit in. I suspect many readers will appreciate the nuanced way both characters were allowed to be flawed with room for growth.

Fair warning: I ugly cried (in a good way) throughout the lovely author's notes at the end. Also, there's an awesome recipe for Yema Balls included, which is such a cool personal touch!

#ownvoices friendship story with a dash of magical realism!

this was so cute and heart-warming!! it was a very fun read and i absolutely loved it. kidlat was too adorable he has a special place in my heart <3

This was a cute story and very easy to follow through. The author's note softened and melted my heart. Still, the characters lack complexity, which I didn't like, and that's why it's not a four stars for me ✨

When Jolina moves from Manila to a smaller island in the Philippines, she is immediately singled out by Claudine, who she assumes to be a rich mean girl. In order to stop the meanness, Jolina brews a magical potion (she is in training with her grandfather, a healer) to get Claudine to stop. The potion works and the two girls become friends. As they get closer, Jolina starts feeling guilty that their friendship is built on a deception. Can she tell Claudine the truth without losing her friendship? This is a great story about friendship with a touch of magic. Recommended for grades 3 & up.
