this book is so dear to my heart, TP at her finest. Humor, plot, and a fun new take on Magic in the realm of Tortall make this a great leap into a fun quartet

This is the first book that ever read by Tamora Pierce and I just had such a good time reading and following the adventures of a strong and amazing girl called Daine who could connect with animals. I would love to have such a magical power. It was so fantastic and entertaining to read that I'm finding myself so eager to read the next books of this series. Daine reminded me a bit of Robin Hobb's Fitz which made me like her more.

Why did I wait so long to read Tamora Pierce? She exactly my flavor of fun fantasy. I loved Daine as a protagonist and how Pierce managed to make her believably 13 years old without making her too irritating, too perfect, or too grown up. She was easy to like and sympathize with. Her trauma was well portrayed. And Alanna and Numair were also great characters. I'm excited to read their stories as well.
