One hit after the other, isn't it right, Layne?

I don't know what to say. I loved it.
The characters were like actual, real people. The continuation of us learning also about the people around played well in the story and added so much.
I do think their last actions were a little rushed but it did not deter from my enjoyment and delight.

For Better or Worse by Lauren Layne is a 2016 Pocket Books publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

Lauren Layne can write romantic comedy like nobody’s business and I’ve enjoyed many of her novels, but this is the first book I’ve read in the Wedding Belle series.

I was a little concerned about the setup, knowing up front some very serious, and possibly sad, topics would be mingled in, however, the seriousness was handled with grace and aplomb, and the story ended up being absolutely adorable.

“Live the life you want, not the one you have”

That is Heather Fowler’s motto. Her goal has always been to live in New York City and to be a wedding planner. She’s making strides toward achieving those dreams, but she wants to step out of the assistant role and become the head planner. To make the impression she has already achieved an elite status she moves into a nice Manhattan apartment, just as she discovers she’s landed the job of a lifetime. It looks like all her hard work is about to pay off. But, there’s a hitch. The bride wants a wedding at the Plaza… in three months time! Can Heather pull it off?

If she weren’t under enough stress, Heather’s neighbor in unit 4A practices his music, which is very loud, while she is trying to sleep. Frustrated, she knocks on his door to ask him to tone it down a notch, and meets the most gorgeous man she’s ever seen, and the most infuriating.

Josh was a hot shot on wall street, but has let that fast paced, all work, no play, high stress occupation go for a while so he can focus on his music and his band. The previous tenant in unit 4C was an older lady who was deaf and didn’t mind him playing music at all hours, and she baked him banana bread. However, the new Miss 4C is just a little uptight, and Josh simply can’t resist the challenge of winning her over.

But, the joke may be on him as Heather begins work on winning 4A’s heart.

While the banter is light and laugh out loud funny all the way through, it’s obvious, some very heavy issues are weighing on Josh. His story is very emotional as he tries to come to terms with the struggles he’s faced over the past few years and where his life is headed now. He wants to live with gusto, knowing full well how short life can be, but something is missing from his life and deep down he knows what that something is, he just hasn’t admitted it to himself yet.

Heather’s backstory is not sad exactly, but it was not an easy road for her either. However, it’s made her the person she is today, but are her priorities on straight?

Josh won my heart almost immediately, with his larger than life personality and how he always got under Heather’s skin, thinking he was totally in charge of this little game, but was never as in control as he thought. I could almost read his mind sometimes, knowing he was in deep, deep denial, but understanding why he was holding back.

Naturally, Josh’s story is the one that commands the most attention and rings all the emotional bells. But, Heather pulls her fair share of the load too, as she learns to balance fun with work, learning what’s really important at the end of the day.

The epilogue sealed the deal for me and so I'm recommending this book to one and all. 4 stars

For Better or Worse is the second of three in the Wedding Belles series and so far has been my favourite (though only 2 have been released) I loved Josh Tanner from the get go – as soon as his character popped up he was the one for me.

We meet Heather Fowler briefly in To Have and To Hold and her character in that book appears to be very blasé about love – she’s all about the wedding planning – which isn’t a bad thing until For Better or Worse.

Heather is a one track mind kinda gal and wedding planning is it. Her big dream and her reasoning behind that is due to the endless string of “The One” from her mother; I don’t – in all honesty the first few times we hear from Heather’s mother – like her, she gives me a bad vibe. But my opinion of her improves greatly the further the story progresses.

My all time favourite character in this book was Josh Tanner. He had the YOLO kind of attitude and the way he spent his life before Heather moved in next door was a “what I want when I want” mentality. He was very funny and kept me smiling throughout the book even when things were getting hard for him he still managed to retain his sense of humour.

It also felt a little like Josh was going through a mid – life crisis and wasn’t 100% sure on where he was going in life. After a battle with cancer he’d taken to the “what I want when I want” mentality quite quickly but had also begun to feel like it wasn’t enough.

His friendship with Heather was awesome – 4c and 4a were the nicknames floating around during almost every conversation – and their friendship didn’t start off all that well but it turned into a budding friendship with benefits that ultimately (despite their refusals) led to love.

The book had just the right amount of seriousness and was – in my opinion – overpowered the great humourous relationship between Heather and Josh; despite their differences and the difficult times they managed to retain the great sense of humour throughout the story.

I really enjoy Lauren Layne’s writing style and she’s definitely my favourite “chicklit ” author which considering I don’t really like it an amazing feat. Her books have always got humour and great characters with witty banter and good back stories. The plots are quite unique as well and I can’t wait until the next Wedding Belles book is out and the next Oxford one for that matter.

Read as an ebook on Libby.

As a person whose mother went through leukemia and has been in remission since 2011, this book really hit me in the feels. Made me cry at least twice. I think this is probably my favorite book of Lauren's just because I could relate to it more and was really rooting for Heather and Josh.

So much yes for this HEA!

I squealed with delight and my heart did a massive flip flop.

There were some lines that did make me narrow me eyes because I'm incredibly picky in my contemporary romances. They were the little everyday things men say that perpetuate and normalise rape culture. However, there was also enough in this book that interrogated the gross sexist behaviour!

The ending also made up for all of my quibbles.

Okay, I admit this book was pretty damn adorable (and also very sexy, can we all say yum to Josh?) and I really enjoyed it.

When I first started reading I was a bit concerned I wouldn't like workaholic Heather and lackadaisical Josh. They were both personalities which I don't always live but together they just worked and had me eager ti read more about them. With Josh and his pursuit of a purpose without realising he was looking for it and Holly and her pursuit for something (or everything) because something is lacking but she can't determine what.

I enjoyed this book but it did annoy me Josh kept his secret for quite so long. It made sense but was insanely frustrating to read. The secrets kept in romances are crazy and I just want to tell everyone to use their words. It was a minor complaint, though, and one I expect to suffer in many a romance.

Oh boy. Where to even begin with this. Is it possible that I disliked this one even more than the first book in this series? This is despite the fact that I was far more invested in Heather and Josh as a couple than I ever was with Brooke and Seth.

I really disliked that Josh kept something so huge from Heather and did that thing, UGH, that thing where one character pushes away the other character “for their own good” which is just the most condescending bullshit ever.

And then that stupid ending, which was so hurried and abrupt and glossed over so much stuff that needed to be talked about and worked through and felt so incredibly rushed and just sloppy. Like, she barely even knew him.

I liked them and their slow progression from neighbors who liked to spar to friends to actual lovers. It felt nice and real and sweet. BUT. The plot, the secret, the Josh refusing to share anything, the ending...actually just gonna stop because I think if I continue on with this review, it’s more than a little likely that I’ll talk myself into dropping this to a two star review. I’m just really irritated by how this book turned out especially since it had a lot of potential and started off great.
