4.01 AVERAGE

Unfortunately my experience of this book was a little disjointed - I listened to it in my car both before and after a vacation, so I had to keep reminding myself who the different characters were, and what was happening in the relatively complex plot. I think I would have enjoyed The Survivor even more had I read it in print format.

Kyle Mills' takeover of Vince Flynn's popular series felt pretty seamless. I think he uses profanity a little less (except when voicing Stan Hurley's character), which always makes me happy. The last several Mitch Rapp books have felt heavy on plot and light on characterization, where I felt Mills spent a little more time letting Mitch search his soul, which was nice. I'm interested to see what direction he takes him in in future novels.

The plot was very strong - I loved the Pakistani involvement, and the traitorous Rickman plan that Mitch and Irene were racing to contain.

I'll definitely keep going with the series, though I am still sad at Vince Flynn's passing.

Another great installment in the Mitch Rapp series. Don't know what more to say that hasn't already been brought up by other people. I will say what Kyle Mills has done with this series is excellent. Not sure how much was laid out before Vince Flynn's passing. But every character felt as they always have from past books. I also love how the series seems to be going further into a more Geo-political setting, other than terrorist organizations going against the US. Cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out.

By far the best Thriller/Spy Thriller series out there. Highly recommend.

The Survivor picks up Mitch Rapp's story where the previous book "The Last Man" ended. Whilst each action-packed book could work as a standalone, personally I think this series is too good to miss out on and would recommend reading it sequentially. 13 books may be a bit daunting but they're all worth it! If you decide against it, all the basic backstory you need is included so not to worry.

The CIA is under threat by previous leaks as well as a new mole and the question is - is a traitor influencing the CIA from beyond the grave, and even dead, how much damage can he do? Mitch is sent searching for answers, with every asset in the CIA under serious threat if the integrity of the organisation can't be protected.

Vince Flynn's death 2 years ago was upsetting for all his fans, and I was very apprehensive about his book being finished by someone else. Kyle Mills had a lot to live up to, and I think that he did succeed to carry that torch to the end. I have read all of the Mitch Rapp series, and there was no noticeable disparity for me between the two authors. Of course with 13 books full of backstory there was a lot of reference material!

The Survivor has great pacing, oodles of action and a flowing, gripping storyline with all the hallmarks of quality Mitch Rapp book and a top political thriller. This is honestly one of my favourites of the Mitch Rapp series; so if you're apprehensive about Vince being gone, don't be - his legacy lives on.

My thanks go to the publishers, Simon and Schuster, as well as NetGalley, for providing me with an Advanced Review Copy. And of course, to Kyle Mills, for stepping into such big shoes.

Satisfying conclusion

I very nearly cried. At several points. If you have read any other Mitch Rapper books you should read this one; however, it is probably not the book to start with.

Mitch Rapp is back, even though his creator is gone. RIP Vince Flynn. Kyle Mills did a brilliant job in continuing the saga. A few things were noticeably different from Flynn, but overall excellent. Can't wait till the next Rapp novel.

I won a Goodreads giveaway for this book and would like to thank the publisher. My review is honest and my views on the latest Mitch Rapp thriller written by Kyle Mills are my own. I absolutely loved this book! Mitch Rapp is back and as good as he has ever been. Kyle Mills has written a book that I believe Vince Flynn would be proud of. Great continuation of the series and I look forward to more in the series.

First off, this is a lovely looking book, the paperback. Fits in with the rest of the series, but looks fresh (as it is in a sense) and feels lovely. Typography alone sold me on it. Continues with the 'one man' theme too, which is good. Especially when you have them all lined up on your bookshelf. And when you look at some of the dog's dinners the Americans have had to suffer...

There is something that needs to be addressed - Rapp is no fun. At all. He has a one-track mind. Describing it as 'determination' works only so far. He's been the 'one man wrecking crew' for so long, he believes it is the only way to be. There is one (extremely) funny/witty aside here, and it really goes to highlight the fun-free zone Rapp is. OK, you can argue that he needs to focus, that his role and the time we're with him in the book, means he needs to be totally focussed, so we don't get to see the 'fun' side of him, that happens off-camera. But even so, there's absolutely no sign that that side of him exists. This really needs to be introduced, and soon. Even thinking back to when he was with his wife, they weren't exactly carefree and laughing. Nowadays, he's more Neanderthal than man. You do bad. Me kill you. We don't need Roger Moore/Bond-type quips (which are rubbish, 'oohh, I'm glad I have my corset on for I fear my sides have split' anyway), but we need something more to help Rapp become a fully rounded, flesh and blood character. That can be Kyle Mills' job.

Having said all that, when you get to the end, presumably the part Mills was solely responsible for - well, see if I'm right or I'm right.

The recent volumes have been perhaps more closely linked than the early books. Not that you're left on a cliff-hanger, but there is a lot of unfinished business and leads into the next one at the end of each last one. Kyle Mills seems to think we need bringing up to speed a little more often than Vince Flynn ever did and that needs to be curtailed. Maybe it was to show that while he may be the new guy, Mitch Rapp is still how we want him. As a writer, I can't imagine Mills will let that happen too often and (having already read the next one), I can confirm he is further developing Rapp, true to Vince Flynn's intentions, but maybe with a little Kyle Mills thrown in the mix.

So, this is probably a book that Vince Flynn either started, or mapped out and Kyle Mills was brought in to finish, or worked with Vince Flynn as his cancer got worse. I'll miss Vince Flynn tremendously. I heard about American Assassin, read the blurb, thought this is for me, just the way I like them and got the lot bought. VF is a cut above just about everything I've read in this genre. As someone who works on a Cancer ward every day, I can tell you, it's hard to see people with Cancer and know there's pretty much nothing anyone can do. Fill them full of poison and cross your fingers. I didn't buy the books out of any kind of sympathy, but I'm so glad I did, I'm so glad I was here, alive, at the same time as Vince Flynn. You'll be missed, Vince.

Good read

My fist Mitch Rapp novel and I enjoyed it greatly. Very thought provoking when you take in the idea of America's involvement in world affairs

This one took me a little bit to get into, but then took off. Pretty typical Mitch Rapp novel. Kyle Mills did a good job.

3.5*
