I don't listen to longer pieces of poetry often, so this was different for me. The switching between "I" and "you" for the protagonist's pronouns was interesting. I'd consider reading more by Millner in the future.

I do think the style the author attempted with this one was unique. An entire book told in couplets is something very few writers could do effectively, let alone try. Looking back on this book I can’t tell you I remember it well. But there are one or two lines from it that rattle around in my brain from time to time. I think this book told the exact story the author needed to get off her chest. The book is vulnerable and felt very much so hers.
*The book is very sexual in nature  so if that isn’t your cup of tea you may want to find something else to read.

Some of this felt really brilliant: the concept of a millennial break-up coded in the syntax of couplets? Loved it, tale as old as time and extremely technically accomplished. However, tonally it was a mixed bag with too many embedded references to other writers. I also felt that the poetry was better composed than the longer form prose, which at times felt overly complex, distanced, and linguistically beleaguered. Polished and relatable overall, yet lacking the depth I was seeking.

”Sexuality is,

after all, a formal concern:
finding for one’s time on earth

a shape that feels more native than imposed —
a shape in which desire, having chosen
it, can multiply.”
