This book was a pleasant surprise. I fell in love with mythology when I was in the 4th grade. My love has only gotten stronger with age. I love mythic fiction, but I am also always a little nervous to trust new authors with my beloved stories. Aimee Carter did a great job of giving a new twist to an old tale.
The story is very well done. You have to appreciate this story as something separate from the classic tale. If you are the kind of reader that gets offended if a modern twist reinvents some of the original details, this story is not for you. However, if you are the kind of reader that can appreciate a modern twist as a fun fiction, you will love it.
The writing was excellent. It was a full on page turner. I read it until 2am when I finally finished it. It was, perhaps, a little juvenile, but nothing extraordinary for Young Adult. I bought the rest of the series as soon as I finished this one. I cannot wait to see how the rest of this story plays out.

Short and sweet YA novel, a little cheesy in its choice of ending but a good quick read.

Lo terminé ayer, y le iba a hacer una reseña, pero no, me da pereza, el libro en general estuvo bien, pero el inicio fue demasiado forzado y apresurado.

I have been fighting myself over the star rating for this book. Do I give it a two, even though I hate low-balling books I tolerated well enough to read to the end? Do I give it a three, or even a four, because of my ability to finish?
I opted for the two, after reviewing how many times I said out-loud, "That doesn't make sense!"
The ending does not support the choices Carter made in the first 250 pages of her book. The reader must assume about 60% of what is going on because nothing is ever truly confirmed. The dialogue was very uncomfortable and stilted for me and I felt I was reading the Greek versions of Edward and Bella, only melodramatically personified. The "greek" was completely missing in this book; Kate dresses in corsets, the gods have mortal names, they live in a gothic mansion, in the middle of Minnesota. This is suppose to be a Persephone retelling, but it reminded me more of Beauty and the Beast, and not Phantom of the Opera, in terms of tone. The book was so tame it was passive, even the Tests, the very crux of the novel, had no active role in the story.
These are problems that merit the two star rating, even if I hate scoring books so low.

This book was amazing and I loved it so much, I read it all in one day! I can't wait to start the second book!
Kate and her mom move to Eden, Michigan so her mom can die in the same place as she was born. Kate just knows she's not ready for her mom to die.
But she may not have a choice. As the new girl, Kate attracts a lot of attention at school. And in the middle of pulling a prank on Kate, the head cheerleader, Ava, hits her head and dies. A mysterious man, Henry, appears and Kate bargains her freedom to save Ava's life.
Kate doesn't realize what she's done until Henry comes to get her on the autumnal equinox. He gives her a choice - stay with him for six months and he will keep his mother alive for that time.
What Kate doesn't expect is to fall for Henry.
A retelling of the Persephone myth - sort of. Kate is not Persephone but the deal's the same. The story stretches incredibility every so often, but it doesn't get too out of life.

It was surprising interesting. I wasn't too into it until my sister told me it was really good. Hades... I always liked you over Zeus.
I really went into this not knowing what to expect. I really did not know it was about Greek mythology, even though the word goddess is in the title this actually might be a good thing, because I might not have pick the book up, And I really enjoyed this book. They were definitely a lot of twists and turns, and it kept you on your toes the entire book. Kate was very likable, and I appreciated how much she cared and loved her mom. Henry, it was definitely not my favorite character, something about him throughout the book and in every situation just bug me. I'm interested to see what happens in the next book, maybe he will grow on me.
I like the ending most of the book was very confusing though
wow! amazing characters and the mythology is researched well.
I fully enjoyed this and will be reading the sequel!
