not great but not horrible. it has me interested enough to read the next book in the series.
It was okay. I think if I had read it when it came out I would have enjoyed it a lot more. It has a semi-love triangle type thing and a take on Greek Gods that doesn't work. Sorry, they were related by blood, why would they care about the seven deadly sins and just a few other things that are too spoilery to mention.
The "twists" were obvious, Henry was almost too nice and with more angst than an ancient immortal should have, and the reason behind the murders was terrible in the context of the actual myths. There are many other things I could complain about being a lover of mythology in general and Greek myth in particular.
I did enjoy the attempt at modernizing the Hades and Persephone myth with Hades needing a new Queen to rule the underworld with. Wish it had better execution.
I doubt I will bother to continue with the series

a description: For the last three years, Kate's life has been on hold, as she has desperately tried to keep her mother alive. Now the end is imminent and Kate knows she is slowly losing the battle. Longing to return to her childhood home, Kate's mom asks her to drive them to a town called Eden, where she wishes to live out her final days. Kate has no idea that this seemingly simple request is about to challenge her beliefs and sanity, testing both her physical and mental strength all in the effort to save one man from fading away forever.
pros: The Goddess Test is a quick, easy read. The pacing is fast with little filler. While I wasn't a huge fan of Kate, in the end, I did connect with her sweetness and her thoughtful ways. However, I did have a hard time getting a handle on her character. I found Henry's character (aka Hades) sympathetic, while he was in no way the classic Lord of the Dead I've come to expect, he was kind, thoughtful, and darkly intense. While this novel uses Greek mythology as a backdrop, it really doesn't take center stage, strangely enough, and plays lightly in the background (sorta like elevator music). This truly is the story of Kate, dealing with losing her mother and coming to grips with falling in love and learning the world isn't as clear cut as she always believed.
cons: There were a few failing points in this novel for me. One the dialogue was a bit jumbled and the tone of the characters often changed. For example, at times Henry spoke as if he were from a different, older time and other times he spoke modernly. This often pulled me out of the moment. I also did not connect with any of the secondary characters nor did I like them or understand who they were. For example, the "main bad guy" of the novel's sudden switch from a likable character to a vengeful villain was abrasive. Ava and James as Kate's so-called best friends never really made an impression on me, other than I found Ava extremely selfish and annoying. Finally, I didn't have a hard time figuring out the huge plot twists. And while I found them to be clever, my world wasn't shaken when they were revealed.
Overall, if you are looking for a quick read about a young girl struggling with the loss of her mother and dealing with supernatural events then I'd say give this book a go. The premise is interesting and the themes were strong, but it definitely didn't feel the author used the richness of Greek mythology to the best of it's ability. And I feel the tone of this novel could have been better.

More like 3.5 stars. Very predictable but a cute story. Not sure if I'll read the sequels. Maybe if I want another easy read.
It's a fine story, I guess I just should have read it when I first saw it in the bookstore instead of years later when I'm out of the target age demographic. It's twilight writing for a story that could have been a court of thorns and roses. Characterization is annoying to me now that I realize being told that the main character is different, and so are their reactions to this special circumstance instead of showing that growth.
Not the story's fault I'm over this kind of character and can't remember a time I was, but c'est la vie.

I really enjoyed the plot of the goddess test. I just wish I had read it in my teen years, I believe I would have appreciated the fast-paced storyline a bit more. Plus, the depth of storyline for Henry and Kate felt lacking. It felt more like a summary of their time spent instead of giving us a lot of heartfelt moments between them, so I did kind of make the relationship feel more like an obligation than an actual love match. I also understand a lot of other reviews have a huge problem with the author not following the origin stories for the God's, but I think that's what makes this story fresh. We are getting a new version of the gods that would make plenty of teen girls swoon.
I regret not reading this when I first downloaded it. I was put off by the whole Greek god thing, as I haven't really read anything like that before. While I've noticed this wasn't most reviewers cup of tea, it is without a doubt mine. I loved the characters, writing style and plot.
I will 100% be reading the next when I put the next lot of new books on my kindle!

It was a great book, full of myth and romance. I do think the author flubbed the myths a wee bit and I think she should have tried to find a better human name for Demeter than Diana because the Roman name for Artemis is Diana and that is who I thought she was talking about when Diana was mentioned.
Die Story an sich war interessant. Die Charaktere haben alle Potenzial. Der Schreibstil lässt sich gut lesen ... aber alles furchtbar oberflächlich und gehetzt
