Loved this book soo much. The characters feel so real, just stubborn teenagers trying to live as best as they can in a crappy town. Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei are so likable yet flawed, and Gu Fei’s little sister Gu Miao is both incredibly unique and adorable too. Jiang Cheng’s prickliness slowly falling away as he grows closer to the siblings is so satisfying to watch, and I was even pleasantly surprised by the side characters. If the story continues like this, it’ll become one of my favorite series.

10/10 give me 14 more

This was my first time picking up a high school setting in the danmei genre, and I’m happy to say it did not disappoint. In fact, it totally exceeded my expectations!

One character that stood out to me was Gu Fei. I mean, his hairstyle alone is enough to make anyone swoon (seriously, so hot). But what really grabbed me was his fierce protectiveness over his sister, which added layers of depth to his character. He’s the kind of character that feels real, and you’re rooting for him every step of the way.

The novel also strikes a perfect balance between humor and angst, making for a reading experience that’s both light and emotionally charged. The romance is a slow burn, with the relationship really starting to develop toward the end. That buildup has me excited for the next volume to see how it unfolds.

I would die for Gu Miao 😭

I've been begging for this to be licensed in English for the longest time & it lowkey still doesn't feel real that the first volume is already out even though I knew without a doubt it would happen at some point. Anyway, I love how we see Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei gradually get closer and just how obvious they are with their actions towards one another. For example, Gu Fei making exceptions for Jiang Cheng on day one by asking him if he wanted a ride on his motorcycle when he's notorious for keeping everyone at arms length. (Btw Gu Miao was gonna get those two together if it was the last thing she did!! (My goddess too is Gu Miao🙏) Like she knew her way around the station there was no way she was actually lost.) To add on though: GF telling JC he could stay at the store if he had nowhere to go, inviting him for dinner, helping JC out in the fight, saying he'd join the basketball team only if JC did, offering to clean & dress JC's wound and doing so, continually sharing his candy (begrudgingly?), offering a key to the abandoned factory, proceeding to cook dinner for him, even something as small as him giving JC his chopsticks when JC dropped his so he didn't have to wait to have his pair washed (even Ding Zhuxin clocked him for that). See also: their shared bouts of laughter, BOTH of them admiring the others hands (what is it with gay people and hands??), again, BOTH of them assessing the other's attractiveness and being like psh I don't like him or anything it's just that anyone would appreciate his looks when they're clearly attracted to eachother, the very easily observed UST between them, and that throughout the whole city, JC is only able to find solace in GF. The scene where GF asks why JC brought up the blanket he dirtied if he wasn't gonna wash it and neither of them relent so they just stare at each other for a few minutes is so unserious like they're both so stubborn (they gay af for all their prolonged eye contact). And the fact that JC thinks GF's attitude makes it hard for him to show his gratitude is hilarious cause bro is the same way he really got a taste of his own personality and was like god get a load of this guy🤦‍♂️. JC was right, they really are able to argue about anything any time they speak. Another thing I always really enjoy is how much humor is packed into the story, I mean seriously, I've reread this so many times now and the jokes will never not land for me. Also, I won't get into it as much as I did while annotating my copy or else this will turn into a thesis but the exploration of nature vs nurture in saye sooo interesting and worth thinking about. I could seriously yap all day so let's end this here for now and I will be back for the next volume :3
