This was so good! I'm pleasantly surprised at this modern coming of age danmei. Every character in this novel has been dealt a shitty card in life and are making due. The home life of the main characters is heartbreaking. I particularly love the contrast this makes to most other danmeis where people start well off and with a solid plan in life.

I love modern danmei, however, I always have low expectations for the school ones since it’s not really my cup of tea. This is why it took forever for me to start Sa Ye despite it being on my tbr for a while now. So, when 7seas announced the licensing of it, I knew I had to finally just give it a try. I’m glad I did.

Sa Ye..is completely different from other modern-school danmeis. In fact, I wouldn’t really categorize it as a modern-school danmei because it’s much more than that. The novel seems more about the lives of the main characters and the struggles they both similarly face. Jiang cheng’s feelings of loss & abandonment hit me deeply because it was kind of relatable in a way. The same with Gu Fei & all the responsibilities he’s essentially forced to take on for his younger sister, Gu Miao (who is absolutely adorable and deserves the world).

I think the comedic effect intertwined with the bleak, melancholic vibes all over this volume really made this more enjoyable than I expected it to be. I can’t wait to start the next vol!
