Mark's been after me to read this for a while so I finally caved. Really good stuff and considering that it's the basis for the new Cap movie, I'm extra excited now. I've never read a Captain America comic in my life and I followed what was happening really easy. There's a handful of well-placed and informative flashbacks although honestly, even if you've only seen the first Cap movie, when it comes to this storyline, you'd probably be fine. There were a couple of action sequences that I thought were a little confusing to follow but they were probably balanced out by the gorgeous two-page spread where the Winter Soldier's memories finally come back. I'll definitely read more of this run on Marvel Unlimited.

Dark and depressing. Despite a good familiarity with continuity, I felt that Brubaker could not capture Cap's character well.

I've read only snippets of super hero comics, so I thought I'd give this one a try since I liked the movie. That's probably lame. Oh well.

I found it interesting enough to read it all in one sitting. The big surprise was not so surprising thanks to the film, but I still enjoyed seeing how the two differed. My biggest grievance was with the art. I'm sure it's difficult to crank out that many panels, especially when going for a more realistic look, but some of the faces were just weird in places. Action sequences were fine. Conversations, a little boring visually.

I absolutely loved the movie, so I thought I should give this a go, and oh my god I just love it even more! This is one of my favourite stories ever, and the art is simply stunning!

Story is reasonably compelling and art isn't unusually ugly. Doesn't really live up to the hype though

Brubaker, you had me from the first page. Lark and Brubaker are a match in comic book heaven. Brubaker's noir sensibilities combined with Lark's gritty style. Brubaker does a great job joining a believable Cap'n spy story with the gee whiz bang gonzo American comic book action. Especially creative is the origin stories for the other Captain Americas and how these fit into the timeline.I've never enjoyed Brubaker's other noir stuff, but he was made for Captain America - at least in this volume.
