2019 - Just a really good, tense, paranoid political spy thriller, with excellent characterisation (I now understand just how much they shafted Sharon Carter in the films) and agonising moral dilemmas. Bucky and what happens to him is the real emotional core of this story, despite the fact that he is barely on the page. He's the ghost that haunts Cap, just as the Winter Soldier is the ghost that haunts post-war Europe.

--------------------
2016 - I have too many feelings about Bucky and I don't know where to put them. Maybe I can exorcise them by going back and reading this? Or maybe - probably - it will just make it worse.

First Captain America I've read a great jumping on point, very beginner friendly as long as you know about Captain America and a bit of his origin (him being a WW2 soldier that get's the Super-Soldier Serum which grants him his powers. Later during the war he get's stuck in ice and saved in modern time)
Ed Brubaker did a great job of writing this story with Steve Epting's great art that compliments the story and tone.
A great thriller

I bought this for my friend for her birthday, because I'm a good friend like that.
Naturally, I read it first.

Brubaker is pretty excellent.
Like.
Pretty excellent.
I don't have strong feelings about Cap, or even about Bucky, but even so...

Damn. Okay. I have a lot of thoughts about this book, most of which can be summed up as just "damn. Okay." This story rips me apart no matter how it's presented. I'm glad I finally got the chance to sit down and read these comics - the art and story are beautifully well done, and the pain Steve experiences is palpable. I also loved the inclusion of Sharon Carter. This was just. Damn.

LOVED it. Steve feelings, Bucky feelings, incoherency!

(also why do they always make Steve SO UGLY)

Setting aside my personal issues with Brubaker's writing (which covers everything from the misogynistic two-dimensional female characters to the lack of internal consistency and often rambling plot structures), this title is a classic for a reason, and it does live up to much of the hype. It's best if you treat this comic as a foundation for the characterisation or a character study instead of a stand-alone story, and luckily that's what I was looking for when I first read this. Divorced from the context of later depictions of Bucky, Brubaker's ~gritty realism~ take on the Winter Soldier is almost hilariously manpain-y, but when you factor in the overarching story with details you can (thankfully) cherry-pick from a wealth of other comics, it's a fascinating new take on an old classic.

DNF'ed @ 45% | didn't care for the story and wasn't a big fan of the art style.

Finally managed to get my hands on a copy of the Ed Brubaker classic, on which the movie is ~loosely~ based. I think the original is of course the best, and I wouldn't say no to an adaptation of this whole graphic novel.
