Had to wait 6 years but that’s alright, I think… -5 stars all the random multiverse bs (which is funny because if this had come out in 2020 rather than 2024 that might not have been a negative) +9 stars because this series was such a corner stone of me and my siblings childhood and I think this final book did it justice.

One of the most beautiful and masterfully written conclusions of a narrative I’ve ever read or seen!

How this book ended up on my TBR: I read the first book and decided I wanted to read the entire series (which of course means waiting for the series to conclude) but probably didn't want to keep it. Now that I have the final book in the series, and I'm sort of racing through them so that I can gift them to my friend's family.
"Highly anticipated" was how I was feeling about this book, but that comes with great risk. Alas, I did not enjoy this book, and it did not bring any closure to the series for me. It actually did kind of the opposite, honestly, to the point where, as some have noted, it seemed completely separate from the previous books in the series. On top of that, it was incredibly confusing. I thought the parasites were the problem, but no. The problem is Earth. I'm not sure that's even a spoiler because it comes way, way out of left field in this final book of the series.
I'm honestly disappointed enough that, while I do want to gift these books to my friend's family, I want to include a note of caution. The trouble really begins when Emily loses it and then eventually comes to understand everything. That's where things get a bit hazy. We never truly understand what she understands, to the point where it's pretty clear to me that Kibuishi either didn't know where he was going, or he did and didn't want to have to explain it to the readers (either answer is The Wrong One in writing). Some have said that the direction of the novels wavered after the sixth book, and I don't disagree, but this book was uniquely horrible. I know this book was a long time coming, and I know the publication was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic (or I suspect that's the case). In that time, I don't know, something happened, and this book lost the threads that the earlier books started.
As always, the art and style of the graphic novel is lovely. That, and the fact that GoodReads does not allow for anything lower than a 1-star rating, is the only reason this book isn't 0 stars for me. It's not great on its own, but wow it's bad when you consider it the closing volume of an otherwise wonderful series.
