Such a fun and spooky read ! First read this waaay back in high school and my mom came across it at a second hand store. Great style of writing ! Loved the Stephen king tv movie adaptation of Rose Red, but the little novel and it's history is even more eerie than the movie. Although obviously not a real life story, this mock-diary accounting the life of the Rimbauer's in a house that literally has a mind and will of it's own was quite interesting and each "diary entry" keeps you coming back for more. Fast-paced and a nice change from the usual style I read.
4 out of 5 stars!

Good old Stephen King. I liked the diary aspect, but I would have preferred more scariness and less sex.

I seriously had a hard time putting this book down. And it took me forever to figure out that a book found in the fiction section, meant to appear as a work of non-fiction, is nonetheless, entirely fiction! Although it can be said to be loosely based on factual events, the work itself is entirely a hoax. But such a compelling one at that! Marriage, infidelity, sex, intrigue, mysterious disappearances and deaths!? This book has it all. Definitely would recommend this to anyone who loves anything of the 'Horror' persuasion, or just looking to read a book while saying OMG-WTF a lot. And I mean a whole lot.

A little bit disappointed it wasn't as creepy as the rose red tv thing it was a prequel to
This book is written like a diary, so it reads fast. There are a few interesting historical references, and at first, I sympathized with the protagonist given the era. However, the story became increasingly ridiculous, and I was completely put off by the sexual content. (It's not that I'm terribly conservative - I read and loved Game of Thrones.... It's just that the sexuality is like I imagine Fifty Shades of Grey to be: cheap and gratuitous). Also, an African handmaiden with mystical powers? Please with the pathetic and overdone Eurocentric stereotypes of Africans straight out of the bush.... A mysterious authoritarian Asian woman on the "wrong" side of the tracks? Ditto. I only finished it because I'm goal-oriented. That's time I won't ever get back.
This book really was just kinda 'meh' for me. I didn't hate it, but it's not one I kept flipping the pages to know what happens. One that I'll probably forget about after awhile, and read it again only to refresh my memory if I'm bored.
It was decently written, just didn't engage me. Didn't feel anything towards any of the characters. Didn't mourn any deaths.
It was just.... there.

I found this book by pure luck at a discount store! It has a remarkable paranormal/mystery feel, based in the early 1900's which is always a win for me. First off, let me warn you how bone chilling this read is. Secondly it's based on true events, which frankly is unbelievable given the magnitude of the horrors in this book. I read this book in 3 sittings. I loved the diary dialogue making not only creepy but sneaky.
This is a fun little prequel companion book to the entertaining, but not necessarily good, Rose Red miniseries. It was way spicier than I expected, since the miniseries was very low on the spice-meter. It's fun to get wrapped up in these Blair Witch style fake documentaries and diaries.
