a disgraced lawyer now working as a temp comes across the personal emails of a partner at the firm and becomes obsessed, at first enamored with both him and his wife, and later wanting to take his wife’s place. she spends a lot of time “researching” and stalking them. it’s fun to read about how she uses the internet to get info on people. but that’s only half the story. it’s also about the mc trying to figure out what happened when someone she knows disappears.

everyone in this book is insane, but the story is boring at the same time since it’s repetitive and a bit too convenient for the mc.

This suspense give “girl on the train” meets “you” vibes with an unreliable narrator with stalking tendencies.

I did predict a good bit of where this was headed so I took off one star for that, but overall it was fast paced and unique in my reading as I haven’t read much in the realm of “stalker” fiction!

This is a great portrayal of an unreliable narrator, and more so, a narrator you just can't trust because you know she's obsessive and untrustworthy. This is a pure psychological thriller, so if you're into a lot of psych-based suspense and a narrator who you won't necessarily like but you'll feel drawn to at the same time, read Cameron's work.

Thank you NetGalley and Ballantine Books for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Cassie Woodson is crazycakes. I mean, is there any other description? She has a past relationship shrouded in mystery and all the reader knows is that it ended in blood and the loss of a promising law career. Now, I am all for unreliable narrators, but I found Cassie to be an unlikable narrator. Her obsession with someone based off of one email was disturbing. I'm sure it was supposed to be, but I never really rooted for her which I need in a book, even when I find it interesting. Still, I did enjoy it and it picked up about halfway through.

Cassie’s life has taken a terrible turn. Once an aspiring partner at a law firm, she’s now relegated to a temp job in a dingy room that’s got to be depressing as hell. She doesn’t even have her own desk, but rather just a chair at table. She’s a nameless face in a sea of worker bees. She used to be a rising legal star, now she sifts through emails looks for ammo for a fraud case the firm she’s temping at is handling. It’s tedious and boring. Except for the fact that sometimes, she intercepts personal emails. And those can be juicy.

Cassie isn’t just down and out over work. She’s also suffered a mysterious breakup that the reader doesn’t know much about. Just that it basically shattered her hope for love in her life ever. So when she starts reading the emails of a partner who looks to have just about everything, including a wife that he adores, she starts obsessing a bit. First over how amazing his relationship with his wife is, and when that turns out to be less than completely true, how she can insert herself into his life.

It’s an age-old tale and it never ends well. Maybe this time will be the exception? Just One Look is a great tale of how longing for a better life and success can lead to jealously, obsession, and worse.
