Another NYC popcorn thriller in the books from Lindsay Cameron!

This one involves a meticulous stalker in the world of law, and I couldn’t get enough of it!

I'm going to be honest as say that I only finished this book because I won it in a Goodreads giveaway, and I wanted to see why she was fired. I was not invested in Cassie at all. I'm not someone who has to like a main character in order to enjoy the book. In fact, I love hating them. However, Cassie came across as annoying, a terrible liar, and just plain stupid. When it all comes crashing down she still thinks that she can fix it. At least she never gives up. The very last sentence made me roll my eyes. I guess some people never do learn.
There was a lot of potential; sadly the story fell short for me.

Just One Look… couldn’t hurt, right? This book was a good dose of crazy.

The Plot:
A psychological thriller centered around the main character who is (more than) a bit unhinged. Cassie Woodson, a once-prominent lawyer, is fired from her job due to a mortifying incident that went viral. Now a temp worker at a law firm, she is just trying to survive. Humiliated and self-medicating to numb her pain, Cassie latches onto anything that will make her feel alive again. So, when she comes across personal emails from one of the firm’s rising stars, she becomes fixated and infatuated with his life and marriage. Cassie is so blinded by her obsession that she can’t see what’s happening right in front of her face.

My Thoughts:
I liked this book, but I didn’t love it. Told solely from Cassie’s POV, it was, at times, hard being inside her head. Her mind shifts back and forth between the past and present. The past provides answers as to why Cassie is the way she is, but there are still some gaps.

I found myself feeling sorry for Cassie because she had fallen to such a low point, and other times I wanted to yell at her to get help.

This was fast-paced and kept me turning the pages, especially toward the end. The last 20% of this book introduces a new element – a twist that I didn’t see coming!

3.5 Round Up to 4 Stars

Some thrillers I love and some are just not as good. This book falls into the latter category. I wish there had been a character I could have rooted for in this book. But all the characters were unlikeable from the start. Cassie is sympathetic to an extent, especially as her backstory unfolds in the last couple chapters. However her obsession, self destruction, anger, and violence are hard to condone and difficult to sympathize with. Ultimately the twists were predictable and the action of the last 20% of the book did not make up for the stagnant lead up.

Cassie, the MC is crazy! In all the good ways crazy girls are. Not only does she have me changing my passwords but now I’m considering all those emails I’ve sent to Hubby over the years. Oops.

She is fantastic and such a riot to read. She reminds a lot of one of the MC’s in Robyn Harding’s HER PRETTY FACE.

The best parts of this book are being privy to each of her interactions with other characters in the book which will make you feel better about any social inadequacies you may have.

She is so much fun..

Definitely one of those books you can’t put down because the protagonist is such a mess and you can look away from the mess. This book does not pass the bechdel test. It’s all about the men. Writing was pretty good and overall a good beach read.
