our latest bookclub selection - not my normal genre at all - but it was a serious page-turner!

7/10

This book is so much better than her earlier novels, very believable characters and shocking topic - it could happen?!

Best book I have read in a while, couldn't put it down xx

First of I have to say this is a genre I don't normally read and have little interest in. So my review is biased by this. My criticism might be something you like and appreciate about the genre.

For me reading this was very slow, I couldn't get interested in the characters, as they were mere stock figures, who had nothing new to offer.
The story itself was hard to get invested in as well, due to it's extreme predictability.
Apart from the last 40 pages I didn't feel any attempt at suspense and action.

In my video I explain that I consume this genre preferably in moving pictures, as my eyes and my brain can keep up at the same pace. Reading my eyes are too slow and my brain gets bored. Also I rarely want to spend the time I need to read a book on this kind of story, in movies I don't have time to really get upset about stock caracters, I don't live with them for a week.

If none of this disturbs you, give this book a go.

After reading the Rizzoli and Isles series, I backtracked and decided to read all of Gerritsen's other work. Reading her first book, Harvest, was a no-brainer for me. Harvest gave me the complete creeps and I loved her medical thriller writing style.

I'm so glad I've found this author, another great, fast paced read!

(for me)

Dr. Abby DiMatteo, Yakov, Mark Hodell, Dr. Tarasoff, Katzka the police officer, harvesting organs, Nina Voss, Bayside hospital

I absolutely loved this book. The suspense never let up, and I found the characters likable and believable. Wish I could follow their life after the book ended, that’s how much they crept into my heart.
dark mysterious tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

It’s honestly been so long since I’ve read a proper crime novel that I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this. I wasn’t sure it would even be my kind of thing despite how many crime shows I watch on tv.

All my worries and uncertainty were quickly swept away by Gerritsen’s writing style. I was instantly comfortable reading this book and I found myself flying through it, absorbed in the slow-evolving plot and the main character, Abby.

Abby really is such a solid main character. She’s smart and headstrong and vulnerable to boot. When things start going south for her, she does what she thinks is right, regardless of how much danger she might be putting herself in, regardless of her fear, and I really admired that.

The plot really is a slow burn, but it’s so worth it and I was never once bored. The build of momentum is perfect and that ending had me on the edge of my seat.

This book may have reignited my love of crime fiction and I can’t recommend it enough.
