Learned a lot about schizophrenia, it was interesting how differently it manifested among the different boys. Interleaving the life of the Gavins and the science of schizophrenia didn’t really work for me, I feel like both stories failed to fully wrap up. Glad I read it, but definitely very disturbing and sad.

I forgot he wrote Lost Girls… wouldn’t have picked this up if I had remembered.

Before reading this book, I was under the impression that we had a “cure” or at least a generally agreed upon way to treat schizophrenia. This book was such a beautiful first hand account of these siblings growing up and grappling with their siblings slowly developing illnesses, the fear that they will develop these illnesses, and the care of taking care of a sick sibling, or the self imposed distance from a family that has harmed you. I deeply appreciated the experience of reading this book.

It was so interesting to learn more about this family. It is amazing the research that has been done using genetics from this family -- to aid other families in supporting them during illness and recovery periods.
First of all, I cannot imagine having 12 children. But to have half of them dealing with such severe mental health issues . . . I am not sure how the mom did it! Just reading about their experiences was overwhelming.
I am fascinated with psychology and mental health so I found this to be an enjoyable read.
