Well written, but not quite as interesting as I had hoped. The stories of the Galvin family are interspersed with scientific chapters about psychiatry, the history of schizophrenia, and the pharmaceutical search for treatment. I admit to skimming quite a bit of these drier chapters.

I had hoped this would go into more details of what the family experienced, how they coped, and the personal input of the remaining brothers. Instead, it seemed to gloss over much of the daily struggle, noting only that this brother was back in the hospital, or that brother was on a new cocktail of drugs. I had expected it would read more like Educated by Tara Westover.

This was probably the most boring book I have ever read. Maybe it was that I already watched the documentary and read books about schizophrenia.

I struggled with some of the denser scientific explanations in the later half of the book, but ultimately really enjoyed the dual narrative of the timeline of scientific research into schizophrenia alongside the family storyline.

[audiobook] Intricate, challenging, and deeply engaging; very much of the Radden-Keif ilks
