This is a beautifully crafted story that can be rated higher for the story itself; however I struggled to enjoy it, so lowered by 0.5 stars for my personal response.
This is a beautifully written Christmas story but is desperately sad, about two young sisters (motherless and with an alcoholic father) struggling to survive in Norway. Like many other reviewers, I feel slightly misled by the book's presentation - its title, design, blurb - that didn't really let on that it is not an upbeat story. I am not annoyed by this, but it means that I struggled to keep going, when instead I would much rather just enjoy some cheerful holiday fluff.

I think something was lost in translation on this one for me.

Squeezing this one in before the end of winter--the hold list was long around Christmas! A sweet, at times sad story of a little girl helping her sister at a Christmas tree farm, as they substitute for their father who has relapsed in to alcohol abuse. The people looking out for young Runya are many, and the magic of Christmas makes an appearance.
The ending of this book was so surprising and it completely wrecked me. This is a good and poignant holiday read, but not one you want to read to get in a fun Christmas mood.

Absolutely loved this little novel. Bought in the bookshop at Tromsø airport, I read it coming home from Norway and the snow and shed a few tears.
