Without knowing it, I read this book exactly two years after Shantaram and it being exactly the same amount of time passed between the stories, it found it worth mentioning.
Anyway, we're back in Bombay and Lin, Lisa, Didier, Abdullah, Karla, Khaled, the Gemini Georges and the rest is still around. Life happens. Not the average Joe life, but the life of mobster, gangster, smugler, self destructive, drinking, smoking, gambling Joe. And it's portrayed in a way that makes it seem closer to paradise than anything else: life, death, love, philosophy (sometimes a bit to much), laughter, fright, fleeing, hiding, fighting, losing, winning, resting, and being in peace is they keywords when Concannon, an Irish guy is trying to get rid of Lin, when Idriss is the new teacher, when the Company has a new boss with less respect and loads of guards, when Lin leaves the company and Karla returns to his life. We're travelling to the mountains, to Goa, to Sri Lanka, but mostly we stay in Bombay, the beloved city.

Woah! What an epic tale. It's been many years since I read Shantaram, so I can't really comment if this sequel is as good as the original - and does it even matter?!
I found the story was well-paced and kept me engaged right throughout its 900+ pages. The characters are all extremely loveable, even though I'd probably hate them in real life. There's humour, deep philosophy, drama and poetry all intertwined. I did find that I lost track of the overarching story line at times - I think the strength of this writing is in the lively interactions between the characters and the presence and detail in each adventurous moment, rather than plot development. However I still enjoyed the ride and hope there will be another book in the series.

It's a good read after reading Shantaram here we have Lin aka Shantaram looking to leave the Mafia life behind and start off something new, we get to understand why Karla married politican and Newspaper owner Ranjit.
Understanding Karla's feelings to Lin and meeting Idriss Khader Bhai's teacher and how Lin learns wisdom and is enlighten it's good read with Lin, Didier, Abdullah and the rest of the crew.

I love this book! After reading Shantaram and being immersed in that reality I was so glad to continue the journey in this one. I highlighted so many things in this book that I'll return to. It's and adventure book with a lot of inspirational passages.
