3.5. this might have been 4 stars but i kinda lost interest towards the end..
I was a bit underwhelmed by this book. There are just so many (better) similar works. If I want strange worldbuilding, China Mieville ist a better choice and many things in here are very similar to „The Thing“, which is a fond memory as well.
Nevertheless there are things to like in this book. You really get a good connection to Borne and especially some work within the Company gave me the creeps.

VanderMeer is so good at pulling me in while repelling me all the while. I prefer the Southern Reach, but that is a high bar. Borne was definitely good enough for me to continue to journey through VanderMeer's works this fall.
Borne is a special character. The strength of each character in a small cast is I think what sets this apart from a more generic dystopia. The dynamics are complicated, but easily understood. The mysteries of the world are unknowable, yet accounted for.

Love the weirdness and Borne and the world building.
Hated Wick and could not for the life of me understand why Rachel was romantically involved with Wick in the first place. It makes no sense. I feel like Wick could/should have been cut from the novel and it would have been better.
I hear book 2 is better so I will continue with the series.

immagino che non siano quattro stelline piene, forse su avvicinano di più a 3.75, ma tant'è.
il libro mi è piaciuto, non ci sono dubbi, ma ho trovato la prima parte davvero troppo lenta, poteva essere molto sfoltita, anche perché il rapporto Rachel-Borne poteva essere sviluppato senza quei pipponi assurdi che ho trovato difficilmente digeribili.
poi, ma credo che ora il problema sia mio, non mi è chiaro da quanto tempo il mondo sia come è descritto, mi sarebbe piaciuta una maggiore chiarezza espositiva.
il finale mi è piaciucchiato,

quello che succede a Borne l'avevo immaginato da pagina 30 circa, ma è un dettaglio bene o male sorvolabile.il personaggio di Borne, comunque, è stato costruito benissimo, e anche il mondo è abbastanza interessante, quindi credo che quando avrò tempo leggerò la novella (?) The Strange Bird .
