This book just oozes charm! It provided such a nice, relaxing, lighthearted break from all of the fantasy and dystopian type books I've been reading lately. To me, it was very reminiscent of James Herriot's line of books, except there weren't any four legged patients in this one. If you're looking for a book that will provide light hearted yet sweet storylines, a curmudgeonly yet loveable doctor, and colorful characters on every page, this book is definitely it.
The perfect novel at the perfect time is always a joy. I was feeling a little depressed and no books were grabbing my attention. My sister suggested I listen to this one and I must thank her as it totally brightened my day.. Reminded me a little of All Creatures Great and Small (this is a huge compliment) and my neighbor Joan, from Bolton. Must thank her as some of the terminology in the novel might be hard to understand, but thanks to her I totally got it. Its just a nice lovely story filled with quirky characters, lovely settings and just a reminder of a simpler time. It makes me long for a community where people watch out for each other and enjoy the things that really matter.

Occasionally the story-telling is a bit disjointed and Mr. Taylor certainly seemed intent on stuffing as many incomprehensible colloquial phrases and rural Irish stereotypes into the book as possible. But it's a readable story, and I'm a sucker for anything from the Emerald Isle.
