aside from the casual misogyny sprinkled throughout, and how sore my eyes got from all the rolling they were doing, it’s good stuff. i’ve read the series before; idc about accuracy or anything like that. they’re shark movies in book form, and that’s good enough, yk?

Not particularly well written and not as fun as the silly concept - beyond a very pointed introductory scene - but the worst of it was how misogynistic it was. Was looking forward to reading the later books as they sounds like they get progressively more daft but will probably give it a miss.

Meh

This gory, fast paced novel about the legendary Megalodon thoroughly satisfied my obsession. Many plot holes and entirely unbelievable but who cares, it’s a book about a man-eating, albino, sixty foot long prehistoric shark rampaging through the Pacific Ocean. Would have been better if the writing wasn’t so sexist and the author decided to devote some time to character development instead of repeatedly describing the Meg’s ability to sense electrical impulses. We get it, it can sense heartbeats (what else would you expect from an apex predator)

DID NOT FINISH: 13%

I just couldn't. The affair plotline, and the poor writing of the women characters. Why spend time with a book you don't love.

I first read this book back in the late 90s when it was originally released. Given I’m a fan of creatures and monsters, I was eager to dive into this story. Happily, I was not disappointed. Discovered in the Mariana Trench, a “Jurassic shark” (a prehistoric megalodon) manages to reach surface waters, where it goes on a rampage in the modern world. The characters and great—people you can cheer for, others you boo with relish. Dr. Jonas Taylor, ex-Navy deep sea submersible pilot is especially excellent in the lead role. There are good guys, bad guys, a cheating wife/pushy reporter, billionaire playboy (who happens to be Jonas’s best friend) and a brilliant, beautiful scientist. I recently discovered the author wrote a number of books that piggyback on this one, hence my desire to re-read The Meg. The story has also been made into a movie—which I’m sure (when I finally see it) will have me breaking out the popcorn. I can’t wait to follow up reading the other books in this series of shark adventures—maybe just not at the beach!

Though I planned to read it first, I ended up watching the movie before reading the book. I prefer the movie to the book. The book was still good but they changed EVERYTHING for the movie and in most cases made it better I think. I like how they completely changed the bitchy ex-wife, I much more prefer the nice version of the movie. Still, it was a good book and I will read the series.

I am definitely going to read this one again.
