Is it fun? Yes

Did I enjoy the scientific descriptions? Yes

Was it action packed? Sure

Slightly different from the movie (the wife’s a pain in here) but overall an easy breezy read (or listen, as I did)

I love shark movies. I love shark movies because of the quintessential summer blockbuster film, Jaws. Last year I decided to read the novel that inspired one of my favorite films and was left feeling utterly disappointed and a little bit angry. I decided to give the genre of shark novels a second chance with Meg. This too was a mistake.

Well the film was cheesy fun with Jason Statham and rain Wilson, the book was trying to take itself far too seriously and failed at every turn. This felt more like a dude trying to cosplay his Michael Crichton fantasy than a book that really could’ve spawned legitimate sequels. It’s a quick read filled with casual Asian fetishization, half hearted attempts at scientific explanation, and giant swings in direction… like how did our hero go from “locked down at a naval hospital” on one page to chasing down the shark on the open water and getting attacked on the LITERAL NEXT PAGE.

do yourself a favor and stick to the film.

Lacks the gravitas of Jurassic Park or Jaws, but a solid thriller and delightfully silly. I'd read more in the series.

The book was slow at first, but I love sharks and loved the movie that was based of this book so decided to push through. As soon as I got deeper into the book, I couldn’t put it down! Can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

This book was a trip. It was SO over-the-top at times but man- the body count, the description of the attacks/kills, and even the educational aspects of the Meg were all fascinating. I ate this one up!

I wanted something a little bonkers, something to get lost in. And I ended up being reminded why I don't (often) read books written by men: they write women like they hate them.

Of course Jonas's wife is awful and grasping and cheating and has "grapefruit" tits and fell out of love with him the second he had a problem (PTSD). Of course the author has to mention her "mother's mobile home"; can't fix trailer trash! And of course she gets eaten.

Of course the "hotshot female submarine pilot" who he's rude and dismissive to, way too young for him, and in no way ever indicates interest in him, falls hopelessly in love with him 3/4 of the way through the book so that Jonas can get laid. What does her pussy taste like, Jonas? Bet you don't know.

Of course the MEG, the villain, the whole point of the story is female, eating her mate early in the story and then rampaging around the world eating as many people as she can. And of course, she's pregnant. Can't miss an opportunity to knock a hormonal female.

Of course there are stereotyped depictions of the people on Saipan, particularly the hot "native girls," but oh no, not the fat or old ones.

Like, WTF? I just wanted a rampaging shark, some heroic people to save the day, spooky submarine dives, and screaming beachgoers. Why did it need all the misogyny?
