This was like a Tom Clancy but with biology and sexism. I like Clancy. I did not like this. I do not need any more biology than I get at school, nor do I need or want to know how the ocean works, nor do I want to hear about how big the breasts are of the ladies. I do not want to hear how
Jonas made out with Terry all covered in the shark’s blood
The only good thing here, were the girls that threw someone’s clothes out of the helicopter. This star is for them.

I want to make it clear that I came here for Jason Statham after watching the movie. In what world is Jason Statham 1.80 and does he have hair?

Fast and easy read with lots of thrills and suspense. This is an exciting read, pure entertainment!

Far-fetched but fun = that's the point of these types of books anyway. There's so much that fascinates man about the creatures of the deep, so many hidden horrors beneath the water. This goes farther than Jaws, to the original beast which grew up to 60 feet, the Carcharodon megalodon, a shark that would swallow today's Great Whites. Clearly these creatures went belly up long ago, but the author takes pains to paint a realistic enough plausibility of how one could survive, break the surface, and become a modern day terror.

There's no way this could make a decent movie because of the budget - this shark was huge, and the author takes it on a long ride to destroy many types of vessels, even attack a helicopter, all in the name of giant shark fun. I could have done without some cliche characters like the hard-driven, ambitious, evil wife, but the scene with the shark pod was epic enough to make up for it. Her love interest was unrealistic, though, the weakest character written for the story. Jonas was a main character strong enough to propel this shark-driven story forward - it opens with him lecturing about the legend of the monster, then he's forced to confront his worst fears and make them a new reality.

The pacing is swift and this one is hard to put down. Even if a lot of it is unbelievable, especially a certain escape at the end, that doesn't matter. A few times there's a creep factor, especially when exploring the mariana trench and picturing that triangular head that appears to grin...There's enough science driven in it to keep afloat, plenty of action to invest interest, fun moments, tense and narrow escapes, and even a small nudge toward a sequel with the final page.

I have the fourth one, but it will have to wait until I track down the second and third first.

I LOVED this book. This was the first book this author put out and it was much better than I anticipated. After reading Jaws and being more than disappointed I had low hopes for this book as well (not to mention I was only reading it because my dad had recommended it to me.) The shark attacks are fantastic, the characters are believable and the impossible is explained in such a way that you believe it could really happen. LOVED it.

big shark. this was kind of pulpy but it was really fun

I suppose the story is ok. However, I hated all the sexist descriptions of the female characters who were all bitches according to the male characters and that includes the shark. I felt like I was stuck in a locker room with a certain POTUS. It's also so full of repeated descriptions of shark biology that it becomes incredibly boring. Now don't get me wrong, I actually find sharks extremely interesting and have several well read factual books about them. Strangely, I have a memory that lasts longer than the time it takes to read a book, so, I don't need reminding every time the shark makes an appearance of it's basic abilities.

I thought it was a very good fast summer read. Sort of reminded me of a prehistoric Jaws. While some of the dialog was stilted and some parts fantastical it met its purpose, to be a thriller with plenty of action.
