Rowling is a trash human.  I got invested in this series before she started running her mouth and we knew so I check her books out of the library to minimize her financial gain.  I refuse to review them.  I read them secretly in my house out of shame.  I considered not adding them to my “Read” list but I did actually read them so I added for accuracy.

This book represents a return to form after the duffer that was Ink Black Heart. The premise - Robin infiltrating a cult - is probably the most interesting of the series to date. There are the usual excessive number of characters and false starts, but ultimately a really good read. Robin and Strike’s relationship doesn’t progress massively in this book as they spend the majority of the time apart. While separation doesn’t diminish their connection, it does seem to make it a little easier to bear, for the reader as much as anyone else.

Great mystery! I really enjoyed the alternating chapters- one following Robin as she goes undercover to get dirt on a very dangerous cult (United Humanitarian Church), and Strike working the other cases. This format kept me on edge. I could see early on that Robin going undercover was a bad idea, and I was right, but it all works out in the end. Galbraith really shows the power of cults and brainwashing, how easily it can be done.
