i feel like the endings of these books are all rushed. the fall of the villain? antihero? it's always so quick that you don't even know it's happening until it's over. this one didn't grip me as well as the others, which is disappointing because this was probably my most anticipated read in the series. also so many lingering questions? i don't know.

3.5 stars. I really enjoyed this right up until the Valentino began trying to integrate her tale with the previous works in this series and the Disney movie. The story of the Queen of the Dead, her lands, and her sisters was a fascinating one, and I’d have liked to have seen what she could have done with it without these constraints.

I liked it and I felt the plot made sense… the only thing I wished for is that there wasn‘t the repetitive thing about three sisters, which we had a few times with the other volumes.

This is the fifth book in this series. I feel like I say this every time I read a new book in this series, but this is by FAR my favorite. I would have never imagined Gothel going through what she did as a child. This has been the most heartbreaking Disney villain story yet.
3.5

So far this was the longest story in the saga, and honestly it deserved it! There were some scenes that creeped me out, others that felt forced or exaggerated, but the atmosphere and the charm that has characterized the entire series is undeniably here. I loved how Gothel became the woman we met on the film and to discover what made her like that.
