I wanted to like this more. It started off very interesting, and the author writes really beautifully. Definitely a lot of similar writing to Where the Crawdads Sing. Unfortunately, it took a long time to get to the interesting part of the plot. By the time it reached the climax, there was little left to the book and it felt rushed. I wish the pacing was a bit better, otherwise I enjoyed everything else about the story. Thank you to NetGalley for the giveaway!

Maybe more like a 3.5, rounded up. The last several chapters could have been tripled in size. I would have loved more details here.

Oh I’m enraged. This is NOT a feel good book. This is a good force your friends to read it so you can yell about it with someone book. But don’t worry, it’s a good book.
Back in my women in the American South mood. We’ve got an orphaned teenage girl who grew up with her father living on his employer’s land. Soon the state intervenes and she is taken to live with a family outside of Charlotte. Cautiously optimistic about this new family, she shows up only to be treated as a servant. Things never really improve from there.
[Not a spoiler. It’s literally in the book-sleeve-summary.] This book shines a light on North Carolina’s DARK history with eugenics. For those who are unfamiliar, North Carolina was one of the few states in the country to have an official Eugenics Board. Like BLEAK stuff.
Anyways, it’s a great book. The plot moved faster than I expected but that also may be because I read it in a day. Some reviews have compared it to Where the Crawdads Sing but to me the only comparison is being set in North Carolina, a poor female main character, and her liking the beach. So don’t go in expecting Crawdads vibes. If you are also a fan of women in the American South vibe books then I think you’ll enjoy this one.
