The Last Carolina Girl had the bones of a great story, but the execution left me a bit underwhelmed.

The pacing felt uneven — the beginning moved too slowly, while the ending felt rushed. Still, I was drawn to the story and am ultimately glad to have read more of Church’s work. I highly recommend her sophomore novel, The Girls We Sent Away (a standout by comparison.) While I wouldn’t say you should skip her debut, it just didn’t quite land for me in the way I’d hoped. That said, one of Church’s greatest strengths is her ability to make you truly feel for her characters — and in that, she absolutely delivers. I’m still fuming on Leah’s behalf

Heartbreaking but beautifully written. The descriptions and landscape made you feel like you were there seeing them, and my heart went out to Leah in her story for what she went thru all the way around. I enjoyed the setting being in Matthews/Charlotte, living nearby. The concept of Eugenics is such an dark period of time in our history, it's enormously sad and horrific but I'm glad a light is being shown on it with books like these.

This book reminded me of “Where the Crawdads Sing”. For the location and the main character’s social status & similar family situation. This is honestly such a sad story for the main character and although it has a slightly happy ending, it was just so rough. Good story, just not a great story.
