i’m really grateful for the new superman movie and comics like this that show superman’s true side. for some reason, superman gets defaulted as the maga superhero, but he’s never been that. he’s always been a symbol of hope, and a source of inspiration for immigrants, as he’s an immigrant himself. he would never side with those, who hate people simply for being different, because he IS different. we need characters like superman right now more than ever.

A really well-written book. You can definitely tell it’s written for younger readers, but also it does NOT SHY AWAY from showing real, brutal racism. Sometimes I wished the moral of the story could have been more viciously anti-racist. The heroes are very tame and just kinda say generic, “this is wrong but we can beat it with love,” types of things. I want it to go beyond that. I need these racists to be ridiculed beyond belief. I need to see them humiliated and shunned by society. Make that shit hit harder than just, “hey! That’s wrong!”

Just a fantastic read from front to back. Yang covers topics of racism, discrimination, and the struggles of finding your place in the world so poignantly, giving Roberta and her family’s struggles with the Klan legitimate weight and stakes, even in a book that is for all ages. The story captures Superman as a symbol of hope and the defender from injustice for those who need it most in such an incredible way, while also weaving his own struggles of his Kryptonian heritage as the perfect parallel to the struggles of Roberta and her family. The story still finds a way to be uplifting and fun, even when exploring these difficult topics. And it’s an adaptation from the Superman radio series, so cool (and frankly pushes the concept even further in a phenomenal way). The extra historical context at the end of the book was a nice touch too. Such a special read, and one of the best Superman stories out there.

This was the appropriate book for the appropriate time that we live in under Donald Trump’s Fascist regime.  It shows that Superman fights for every one of us.  Regardless of what separates us, there’s a lot more that binds us together.  A fun story that shows that no matter how strong hate is, love will always be more powerful.
