Hauntingly stunning. A highly intriguing world with a great protagonist. The romance was fairly intriguing. It was a bit hollow, but it was unique and strange and weird at times, and I love that. The last part of the story was highly disturbing, but it not only fit the world: it perfectly served the story and tied it up in an unsatisfying, yet beautiful knot. I'll never forget this story / world.

In preparation for read in the Julia retelling of 1984, I re-read the original 40 years after reading it the first time.
Can I just say that 14 year old me overlooked a lot of Winston's misogyny and hatred towards women? I was also surprised that 1984 was frequently assigned to students to read in high school. His vitriol and the weird almost-pedo relationship he has with Julia was glossed over in my original reading.
Honestly, I found re-reading this book to be painful. I’ve revised my rating. For the time, written in 1948, it might have seemed progressive and thought provoking. Today? Not so much.

I’m glad I read it, not my genre, but presents some interesting concepts.
