A fun, grim-dark adventure with an eclectic cast.

The first of the Vampire Genevieve series, this novel follows Genevieve's involvement with the Great Enchanter Drachenfels and largely takes place at his haunted castle of the same name. Unusually, this story focuses on a theatrical play taking place in the castle retelling the apparent demise of Drachenfels some years earlier. There's magic, tragedy, adventure, humor, and a dash of heroism.

It's just a fun little story in the Old World of Warhammer. It's nothing spectacular, but there is a certain charm to it and I look forward to reading more of this series.

My husband likes Warhammer and I go with him to the hobby shop a lot and the dude who works there convinced me to give this a try.  It was fun—the plot is twisty if a little silly and the characters are entertaining if, again, a little silly—but definitely waaaay pulpier than my usual read.  I enjoyed it but I think I would have liked it better if I was more familiar with the lore surrounding Warhammer fantasy.

This is a pretty good story. The characters are all great. The plot didn't grab me though. It's probably just me, but stories about putting on plays don't capture my attention. I felt the same about The Ship Who Sang. It's still a good story and very well written. Many of the descriptions are fantastic and paint a vivid image.

I have to admit to having very different expectations for the story. I certainly wasn't expecting to see vampires pal-ing around with mortals. I'm an Undead warband leader from my Mordheim days and although I haven't cared about vampires for a long time I was hoping this would be a bit more evil.

It's a bit of a Cluedo adventure, or a horror movie where the killer is in the house (Captain Obvious; I'm sure you gathered that much from the blurb). I enjoyed it mostly for the in-universe history, part of an ongoing quest to learn more about warhammer lore.

A very good, old-school dark fantasy/horror book, a must-read for fans.
