Just as good as the first book in the series. Fast paced and exciting, this one did not let me down. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

--------

Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane takes off a couple of months after Gregor the Overlander and we're immediately back into a very exciting story, this time focusing on another prophecy that has been made years ago. If you think things will get less awesome in the second book, you're wrong. It's just as exciting, fast paced and amazing as the first book in the series.

In this book we get to know Ares better. Ares is a bat, but despite being an animal, he has a very distinct personality, maybe even more than the other bats we've met so far. He is angry, and I'm not sure if I will ever end up liking him, despite what he did for Gregor in the first book. Gregor and Ares have to team up to be able to go on the quest that will help them fulfill the prophecy.

Collins shows once again that she is great at writing fast paced stories with lots of tension and adventure. Her writing has addictive qualities that make me just want to keep reading until I've flipped the very last page, leaving me hungry for more.

My overall rating: 4/5

Four big fat stars for the second installment in The Underland Chronicles! Fast paced and exciting, you're in for an incredible adventure once more.

This was a very emotional book. Every time Gregor turned around it seemed something else went wrong. I was rooting for Gregor yet frustrated with things that both Gregor and the Underlanders did. Then I was teary eyed and stressed when things got intense, and I was so caught up it was one of those times I had to force myself to stop and go to sleep. I am completely hooked on these books, and even though I know what's coming, I have to keep reading.

I started this just hours after I finished the first, and as soon as I get on the train tomorrow, I'll be starting the third.

The story builds perfectly upon Gregor the Overlander and the characters--well developed over the course of the first book--develop and grow seamlessly over this second installment. The action is even better in this book, and Gregor comes into his own. Collins has written created a sympathetic boy who is a do-gooder but not a goody-two-shoes.

I really appreciate, too, Gregor's family. Although the Underland world is rich and fantastic, the real world of a lower class family struggling to make ends meet is realistic and relatable.

And I've got to add something that I forgot to mention in my GTO review: because of this series, I've never before hated cockroaches less than I do now. In fact, they're almost okay.

Narrator Paul Boehmer is solid again, although his Ripred sounded off from the first book. Luckily, the rat isn't in this book much, but I hope Boehmer gets back to that original Ripred voice for the next one.
