This was a great story about coming of age & finding yourself while going through intense grief. Emotional, humorous, and captivating — I can't wait for more from her !
“You’re not supposed to 'get over' someone dying. Especially someone you loved. And your feelings of guilt may not be justified, but they are natural. Thing is, you don’t ever go back — to life before. And my advice is to accept that. Accept that you’re not the same person you were when they were alive, and you can’t be again. Accept that your life is different now because of this monumental, irreversible change. And that it’s ok to feel guilt one day and indescribable happiness another. This is life now. This is how you live.”
“We always think we’ll see death coming and that we’ll have more time, until we’re reminded otherwise.”

Almost 5 stars for me. What holds me back from 5 is the beginning where I had difficulty empathizing with Maddie because I don't have lots of patience with people who passively accept things that aren't good for them.
That's bad on me, I know! A fault that I struggle to overcome. I mean, yes I empathize with people having a hard time and yes I do everything I can to help, but when a person just continues to be passive and doesn't take steps to improve the situation then my patience starts slipping.
That's the way the book started, but it quickly drew me in and, maybe, I may have learned that I need to be even more patient!

Moderate: Racism, Toxic relationship
This book was absolutely amazing. It is very deep and the character goes through many different heartbreaking incidents; the largest being the loss of her father. She suffers from depression, but doesn’t realize it until her boss has her see the work therapist. She learns a lot about her likes and dislikes. She learns how to stand up for herself and that family doesn’t always mean the people who care for you the best. She learned what true friendship was and what she wanted from the relationships in her life. It was a beautiful story of triumph in the midst of pain. I believe some of the incidents were true things that the author went through. Beautiful story. Highly recommend.
