This book was absolutely amazing. It is very deep and the character goes through many different heartbreaking incidents; the largest being the loss of her father. She suffers from depression, but doesn’t realize it until her boss has her see the work therapist. She learns a lot about her likes and dislikes. She learns how to stand up for herself and that family doesn’t always mean the people who care for you the best. She learned what true friendship was and what she wanted from the relationships in her life. It was a beautiful story of triumph in the midst of pain. I believe some of the incidents were true things that the author went through. Beautiful story. Highly recommend.

If you're a parentified child or Eldest African Daughter, this book is for you.

4.5 stars and I highly recommend the audiobook because hearing the characters in their proper accents was definitely a more immersive experience than in my inner-narrator voice.

4.5 but rounded up for the beautiful writing. Audiobook was fantastic. I was not thrilled with the ending but I loved learning about Maame and her family.
