Would’ve given a 5 is not for the cliff hanger

They don’t exactly parallel, but I have a feeling at least the themes explored here’ll play a big part in the upcoming MCU ventures.

What a rush, though! Really fascinating and horrific ethical questions poised here, macro-level stuff that doesn’t feel too bogged down by nature of its psychological horror. I’m much more used to manga, so I’m not as adept with reading dialogue boxes that kinda just land wherever it’s convenient (difficult to track flow and direction), but this was pretty rip-roarin’. Jeez-a-loo.

If someone hasn’t ordered a round of therapy for every character featured here, someone isn’t doing their job right.

"There's always a way"

Wanda Maximoff can't control her reality altering powers, and the X-Men and The Avengers have to make a decision on her fate, a decision that Wanda's family aren't going to be too happy about

This is one of the runs which fans will tell you that you have to read, and I am inclined to agree. It's a crossover event with a ton of Marvel characters from the X-Men and The Avengers, but I would say that it focuses slightly more on the mutants than Earth's Mightiest Heroes. This is perfect for me as, amidst the sea of DC content I consumed when I was younger were the X-Men, and they've always been my favourite Marvel ensemble.

Wolverine and Emma Frost are the standouts for me as, unlike many of their peers, they served to progress the plot rather than just be a familiar face who fans could point out and be like "oh, I know them" before disappearing completing into the background. There are other characters of note, but if you were to ask me in 10 years time who is featured in this crossover, these two will be the first that come to mind ( aside from Wanda ).

SpoilerPietro
being the one who convinces Wanda to alter reality isn't exactly a shock, even if the writing tries to make it seem that way. It does result in some nice character scenes for
SpoilerMagneto and Wanda
though, and those moments are some of the most emotional alongside
SpoilerPeter Parker's memories about Uncle Ben and Gwen returning

However, I have never been a fan of X-Men crossovers with other superpowered beings as it just doesn't make sense for the X-Men narrative of persecution and discrimination, and this is one of the things which just doesn't work for me in this book. These people don't have a problem with Peter Parker, or Captain America, or She-Hulk, all characters they feature alongside here. What makes the X-Men any less different except the fact that they're not sapiens? The whole deal about the X-Men is the fact that their powers make them a 'threat', but if they are put along side other beings who have acquired powers, why are they still the only ones who the public fear?

If you can look past that, this is a fun, action packed book which is illustrated beautifully. It's like a massive superhero blockbuster is unfolding on the page before you. Marvel fans who know the characters like the back of their hand will enjoy spotting faces both in the foreground and background, and will appreciate the character interactions. If you've never read a Marvel comic before, I would suggest starting with something different as I believe that this requires some knowledge of the Marvel universe in order to fully appreciate it.

this was SO fun! it was super cool to see the X-Men and the Avengers in the same setting

Amazing! The entire story from beginning to end brings up questions and themes about the things we want the most and what we will do to protect or have it. What happens next, “what will be the reaction,” as Hank Pym asks at the end, is a great question.

4.5/5

Pleasantly surprised. Slow start, builds well. Wanted to read where "No more mutants" began.
