I would give this book a higher rating if Goggins wasn't such a pos deadbeat of a father. He mentioned multiple times in the book about how it's important to set aside time for your family in your routine. Yet clearly, he couldn't be bothered for shit to be in his child's life at all. She hates the guy. And in the acknowledgements he literally named every single person under the sun who has ever even interacted with him in a positive manner. But did he acknowledge his daughter? His first wife Pam, who put up with his shit longer than she should have. His second wife Kate who was his #1 supporter for many years, his field nurse, and his crew chief? Nah. Fuck them I guess. I just can't really consider someone who is so self centered to actually be hard. It's pretty fucking soft to abandon and mistreat those around you who love you. That's the ultimate path of least resistance. It's too hard to care for others, so I'll just avoid it entirely. His message fell pretty flat for me in that regard.

I would've honestly been more impressed if he had looked for psychological help (he clearly needed) to work out his traumatic childhood instead of hurting himself on purpose to show he was "okay."
David Goggins sounds like a really mad soccer coach who yells at your ears in the half time for motivation. In the first few pages I sensed a little turned off at the slight narcissistic tone and also the dark first chapter. But once I persevered into the second chapter, the life of David Goggins is such a movie.
Though its a motivational book, I wouldn’t see it that way. Obviously there are a lot of motivational self improvement techniques there. To point out, things like the 40% rule, path of most resistance, governor, cookie jar, calloused mind are such wonderful ideas.
But personally I don’t derive self motivation from those techniques. For me its in the stories, stories of the achievements on underdogs through perseverance. Goggins’ story is one such wonderful story. He came out of nowhere, he fought against his own tainted childhood, obesity, physical limitations. He broke out all those and belted so many achievements. That is the story which would motivate me. That is my takeaway from this book.

People without an inclination to motivations books will begin to wake off the book at some points in the books timeline. It is mostly linear, and goes in thoroughly into David's childhood and seal training in the first half, with marathon running in the second. I found the book often self congratulatory, but the man is an elite athlete and is of strong mental toughness.. though I find his lifestyle and it's approach to be more of a mental illness. I appreciated the mostly lack of the usual machismo dealings of self proclaimed "warriors". The book mostly focused on what we, mostly goggins, are capable of and how much of the battle is mental. His disregard of injuries is alarming however. It's very much a woowoo book, but instead of hippies it's geared towards the more masculine side of the fence. Anti intellectualism is bad, but at least goggins is genuine and loving proof of his own worldview.
