I made a goodreads account just to come give this a 1/5. This is borderline unreadable because every other sentence is a fragment. It’s impossible to get into a reading flow when everything is so choppy and stilted. I had to quit only 30 pages in. Disappointing, because the premise was really interesting.
So on the one hand, I do think this is an empathetic take (albeit a BIG SWING) on what it is to become yourself and unlearn your upbringing when you’re a teenager. There’s a lot that felt like recognizing yourself in a funhouse mirror, and even though I don’t think (read: I hope) I have much in common with Sophie, I did feel like I got her Deal.
But on the other hand… if I’m about to go into a book where sudden, violent, graphic rape is the CORE of the plot, some part of the marketing has an obligation to tell me that!!!!!!!! I do not think it was ethical for me to have to discover that zero to sixty!!!!! “Manic lust” does not cover it. And I was NOT prepared or grateful.

Holy shit
this felt like a vessel for cj leede to argue against catholicism which i am all for but it was way too heavy handed maybe because i grew up catholic and went to catholic school so i already went through the “wait people picked what did and didn’t make it into the bible” thing
and it felt weird to constantly juxtapose sophie’s attraction to most of the core group with wanting to find noah like i know this is your first time out in the world but one of these things is more important than the other

i loved reading this so much. i have never been religious but i have come to understand that shame and guilt are almost foundational in catholicism which was ever present in sophie’s life but she was such a strong protagonist. the touches of feminism and the discussions of religious fanaticism was just SO SO good. i knew about half way through i’d be crying and by god i was not disappointed
