I would have thought that after so many books, the story would begin to get weaker, less interesting, but it's really not the case. We dig into the relationship of Gamache with his godfather and son, and it's really touching. Also, the intrigue is interesting too.

What a nice mystery to finish the 2020 reading year. It utilized the entire Gamache family in solving the mystery. This story takes place in Paris instead of Three Pines. The information on different locations in Paris historically was nice. I liked the change of location and the characters that were introduced in this one. Each family member had an area of expertise that was used to unravel the mystery. The only slight issue that I had was with Reine-Marie’s seemingly unlimited access to archives at any time of the day or night. By the next book I will be happy to hear more about the Ruth, Gabri, Olivier and the gang at the bistro. I was glad that Armand’s ability to determine character was not derailed even though it got really close with his friend Claude. Ms Penny mentions in the acknowledgements about love, family, remembrances and our perceptions that was quite good. I will post that quote. I also enjoyed the C.S. Lewis quote she added. “C. S. Lewis wrote that we can create situations in which we are happy, but we cannot create joy. It just happens”. Good quote.

This is a book about love, about belonging. About family and friendship. It’s about how lives are shaped by our perceptions, by not just our memories, but how we remember things.

This might be spoilery at some point but I liked this story. I didn't even realize this was well into the series so maybe that would change how I feel about some of the characters.

This is a book that does a lot of lifting early so that you know the characters and relationships and it is done very well. All of the color and background is used well to set the stage. The mystery itself is solid and the twists and turns make sense and don't make the story get too unrealistic. Books of this type can give you so many turns and double backs that it can be super nonsensical.

The main character Armand is super smart but not so smart that no one can maybe get some things over on him. The 'I knew it but needed you to confirm it' is kept to a minimum. As far as what I think is a spoiler, his son Daniel is thoroughly unlikable for the vast majority of the book. It doesn't help that when you get their reasoning for why he behaves the way he does, it doesn't make me feel better about it. It reinforces the way I dislike him. Maybe that's intentional but maybe its just me. That's the only issue I have with this story although I do like that it has this unlikable character.
