I found parts of the book distracting. I wondered why she would include this little detail, or that. In the end, all the details came together.
Good book about how people act, especially in stressful situations. Not quite a thriller, but has a similar tension.
Mixed feelings on this one. There are some particularly heavy themes (infertility, hoarding, OCD, panic disorders) which made the escapism a little more difficult to find than usual with her writing, but this also feels like the first of her books I've read where she really did not know what she was talking about in the hows, whys, and should-I-feel-guiltys of current and former sex workers. But! I still heartily enjoyed it. Thank goodness there is always something Liane Moriarty available at the library.
maybe if i was a middle age housewife in a loving but troubled marriage with two kids whom i love but don't know how to connect with i would enjoy this book
I really didn’t like this book or some of the characters for the first half. I’m glad I finished it though because I ended up really liking the second half and most of the characters. I did feel this could’ve been edited down a lot more as well.
Such a slog. A great premise, but please, please get to the point already!

This book was loooooong. I liked it, didn't love it, but that's hard to do with unlikable characters. I think I'll like it more as time passes and if they make a tv show out of it, I'm in!
I have been really enjoying Liane Moriarty’s books.
This one follows a style pattern in her writing where something happens, but you don’t know to whom or what.
This story primarily explores the friendship of Erica and Clementine, their families and the neighbors near Erica who host a barbecue one afternoon.
There is an important audition for a position in an orchestra for Clementine, the ongoing therapy and efforts of Erica to conceive a baby, and the friendly neighbors Tiffany and Vid that live next-door, who have their own secrets that affect the new school their child will attend.
Heavy on character development, you really get to know each character. The resentment between Erica and Clementine who were pushed together as children, and the relationship viewed from several angles: their mothers, their husbands and neighbors is the bulk of the book.
Oliver and Sam, Erica and Clementine‘s husbands respectively, also have their own trials and secret dreams that are being overshadowed by their wives.
I would say there’s one main event that takes place and everything else is character development surrounding this event. I loved getting to know each of these characters and felt empathy for each one.
It was a really long book- 17 hours on audio, which I thought was too long, that’s reflected in my rating. But I genuinely enjoyed this read.
