I really like the setting, it’s a gothic power fantasy and it kept me invested. I’m intrigued at the hints that were dropped about a bigger issue/ plot line.
Graphic: Death, Gore, Violence, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Vomit

This was a super fun and short book. Recommended by the reading group Vaginal Fantasy, this is a very well written entry into an urban fantasy world that is steeped in gore. My favorite thing about this book was the original take on tired tropes. Vampires - Not sexy, not sparkly, but definitely scary. Were-animals - No full moon, but captures the beast. Blood magic - Hurts. What does the world do if tech stops working sometimes but magic works now sometimes too?
Kate is both a great and poor viewpoint character. She's an ass-kicking heroine who has a mouth on her. She snarks, annoys, fights and abuses her way through the investigation of the murder or her guardian. She has no respect for authority. On the other hand, she has a DEEP DARK SECRET that the author is holding back from the ready, which is a pet peeve. She has Mary Sue like moments because 3 of the most powerful beings in Atlanta are nice to her when they could kill her. She seems to survive damn near everything that is thrown at her, though she does break more than a nail. While bemoaning her lack of hotness, the reactions of others clearly indicate she is in fact hotter than she thinks.
I was pleased with the romance sub-plot. It is not interfering, enjoyable and fun. It is also not traditional in either the romance or the fantasy department, but what can you do.

This was a lot of fun. The main character was really likable, and I read it pretty quickly. I look forward to reading the next.
