FORMAT:  Audio / Libby
WHY: It has been on my 2013 list of books to read
THOUGHTS:  So much character building, I felt I got lost in the storyline a bit. The character building of the mythical/magical creatures is great, but unfortunately, the history and the understanding of what is happening get a little lost in it all. I find I would catch up, and then all of sudden, it would change again. The audio reader was great, though, and resulted in me finishing the book. However, I won't go forward with the series as none of the characters or themes really grasped my attention.

RECOMMENDED:  Mythical and Magical Creatures / magic

Do not be intimidated by the length of this series, they are as awesome as the one before.
The main character is tough and is full of sarcastic comments that will make you laugh your head off.
These mystery books, are the best ever they funny, suspenseful and bad-ass all in one.

Hello Kitty!

Slightly rough, but deeply intriguing and creative for a first book. The open ended conclusion and the obviously unanswered questions are definitely the reasons I could not stop thinking about this book and this series after I read it.

I enjoyed this. I liked that the heroine, Kate, is sort of a badass, but it isn't repeatedly described over and over. I just sort of came away with that conclusion. I also liked that she made plenty of mistakes and was a smartass, but that also wasn't blatantly thrust in my face over and over. But, I also felt like I didn't know her all that well, either, even though the events were from her point of view. I felt like I knew some of the other characters better. I didn't really understand her relationship with Crest, either. It seemed like she had an awful lot of conflicted feelings about him without much interaction. It seemed odd to me. I liked it enough to continue on to the next one in the series.

This first one was just a little difficult. At first, I found the dialogue kind of stilted and awkward and I didn’t get the magic system or setting at all. Definitely stick with this book for the first few chapters. It keeps getting better and gets into a really good groove. The action scenes are really vivid and everything is well-written. I love the characters and this first story is really good too. It sets up the following books really well, getting us introduced to over-arching issues for the series. I really love Kate, our main character, who is super kickass - she doesn’t follow the normal lead female troupes and makes logical decisions (not smart ones sometimes, but we’re all human). In all, it’s definitely worth it to keep going with the series. Even with this first one - something that I couldn’t identify pulled me in and begged me to keep reading.

The next part is for people like me who haven’t read a whole lot of fantasy (urban fantasy, in particular). I’m not familiar with all the different troupes in this genre, so the following information might not prove anything “new” to you.

Also, if you have the real life paperback, there’s a section in the back that describes the different groups, like the Pack, the People, and all the different knights. Give this a look through and definitely read the very first page in that back section. There aren’t any spoilers, but I thought one piece of information would have been useful upfront: the world has suffered a magic apocalypse. I spend the first 70ish pages wondering, so I wish I had known that earlier. That being said, magic apocalypse? Awesome. Give me more!

Ooops. I've been slacking off on my Good Reads updates. I read this a while ago. It was pretty decent, but not the greatest. Perhaps this series gets better with later novels. The heroine is very likeable, a strong woman who isn't afraid to kick some butt. She's a long, long way from Twilight's Bella.

This is like a mystery novel with a paranormal investigator. I'm not a big mystery fan, so this didn't grab me, but if you are into vampires and also into Agatha Christie, I'd recommend this series to you.
