Nothing really wrong with this one, but life is too short to waste time. I just didn't feel connected to the plot, characters, or the world. I kept reading three pages and finding other stuff to do, which is a sure sign that the book is not gonna hold my attention, so we're parting ways.

I like the humour but I got the feeling that I had missed some important back story.
The first book in the series did a poor job of explaining the world and how it worked and I failed to understand why the protagonist got the assignment she did. Even she knew that she was underqualified.

"Kate, the main character, must solve the murder of a close family friend with the help of an unlikely ally. Kate is brash and strong-willed, she doesn’t need anyone's help and is happy to shoot first and ask questions later. But she needs to be careful about how much attention she is getting, she has secrets to keep.
It involves magic, shifters, vampires, and swords. What more can you ask for. There is no spice, but there are several mouth-watering males. This book takes place in a slightly post-apocalyptic world where magic and electricity are on the clash.

I listened to this book on Audible. It was a fun quick listen, about 9 hours."

It took me a few chapters to get used to Kate’s POV, but I really enjoyed the world building and the mystery. I’m definitely going to keep reading the next book in the series.

I can see why people love this. I think the characters and world probably need to grow on me before I join those ranks.

I liked the author's Innkeeper series and I'm willing to give this series more of a try ... But I found the world-building a bit onerous and I'm frustrated with the strong sense that the author is withholding information from the reader (what is with Kate's blood?; why is she so special?; who is her dad/are her dads?). Hope it picks up more!

REREAD: 09/04

Literally just trying to update before the new year, but yep, I'm four months behind on GR.

Original Review:
So, I've read a lot of urban fantasy. I've read even more first 50 pages of urban fantasy and gotten extremely offended at a lot of the tropes. The thing is, I don't hate on the genre. I mean, the tropes are staples of the genre, and if executed well, they shine. They glow within and outside of their genre.

This book did well. The setting is SO cool and even though the book lacks exposition, I'm used to being left in the dark for a bit until the authors get their bearings. The romance almost turned me off, but thank fuck Dr Crest was MEANT to be a red herring.

It's got to be Curran, right? He... not gonna lie, he's a bit much, but, little bits of character have me hoping he'll turn out to be a decent boyfriend under all the pomp. (the PEAS! the roof!) I mean, same for Kate tbh(she eggs him on, this is totally a argument to banter to love, plz?), the line about her playing the stereotype got me, I am intrigued.

The book did not commit the sin of having a heroine who was a "badass" and yet inexplicably turned into a damsel once the supernatural alpha man entered the story. The heroine also had more to her character than "badass", this is in large part due to the execution.

I'm intrigued by her mystery, though after a bit into book two, I can see now that this book is really, REALLY part of an arc, like...it doesn't go on its own. Much like reading only 100 pages into a 500 page book, you get a taste, but in order to cash in on the desert, you need to read on and have the full course meal.

Which I will, so props to it. Many urban fantasy series lose my interest. At the same time, having no way of knowing now if the promising start delivers or fizzles, I'm going to give it 3 stars. I liked it, and I am pumped, erring on the side of "this is gonna be fantastic". The only way to go is up!

Thanks Crystal.
