Kate Daniels has been a name I've heard a lot, and always with glowing recommendations about the series. I'm sad to say, she doesn't do it for me.
The world building had some interesting ideas, but I felt a little lost in the world. I listened to a good majority of this on a road trip, so maybe I missed something, but I had to look up some info on the book before I really got the magic/technology relationship.
I didn't really like Kate. I can't quite put my finger on a reason, I just didn't feel as drawn to her as I have to hero/ines from other series.
I've heard the series gets better, but with all the books out there I'd like to read, I think I'll shelve this for a very rainy day.

The world was amazing, I liked the blend of tech and magic. I liked Kate and the rest of the characters. The mystery dragged me in and absorbed me until I had finished it. Its a bit gritty, but good.
It took a while to understand the different factions and creatures that are in this world. This world is very unique and interesting to say the least. It's hard to understand because it kinda just throws it at you with some explanation but it was so forward that it took me a second to fully understand it.
The story centers on Kate Daniels, a mercenary for hire who cleans up after things when the magic has come and gone. It's told from her perspective and how she goes about investigating the death of her guardian who died doing an investigation of his own. You could tell just how much Greg meant to Kate after his death. Now that she's investigating into his death she has to work with two different factions who can't stand each other. The Masters of the Dead which are necromancers who often use vampires - think someone piloting an empty husk of a vampire via mind control. Then there's the Pack, they're a huge clan of shapeshifters. You've got a clan full of werewolves, another clan that's werebears, another is hyenas, and even wererats. Each shapeshifter clan has their own alpha but all clans The Alpha. The top alpha is named Curran and he helps Kate investigate into the murder of Greg especially since Greg also used to work with the Pack.
What I loved about this book is Kate herself and the snarky, sassy relationship she develops with Curran. Not to say that she isn't that way with everyone because she kinda is - she is extremely mouthy and she knows it even when it gets her in trouble. But I love that they're both people who can kick-ass and stand on their own without each other. Though there is no definite romance you can see that throughout the books their relationship will develop and blossom.
Side note: I fucking love Kate and Curran and I am in love with this whole world and the story and am loving where it's all going.

I picked this up on kindle sale a while back, and decided it would be great airplane reading for a short trip this past weekend. I've read a newer/shorter series by this author (White Hot, I think?) and enjoyed it, so thought I'd give this one a try. It did not disappoint, and while I wasn't sucked in to the point of immediately buying book two, I'll definitely be moving forward with the series sooner rather than later.
The heroine, Kate, is a mercenary in a future Atlanta that is wracked with waves of magic and of technology, when one works and the other one does not. There are necromancers, vampires, shifters, and probably many more paranormals, along with a few organizations and even government bodies tasked with managing the chaos. Kate herself has some powers that are not clarified, and has a magic sword, and between those and her own training and experience she's pretty formidable and capable of doing her job.
I liked that there was no obvious romance in the first book, it was a refreshing change. I also appreciated that not every encounter left Kate seriously injured, unlike another series that I quit reading because so much of it was "tear up the poor human female protagonist." There are interesting characters with various motivations, there are ugly dead vampires (and not hot sexy ones), and there is government bureaucracy out the wazoo. All in all, a well described and interesting world, populated by interesting characters (especially the shapeshifter Kate gets help from, the one who can take various human shapes), with an interesting plot.
This one is probably rated a PG-13, mostly due to violence. Good reading and well edited, I enjoyed this book a lot.
