Overall it was fine, but some of the interpersonal interactions were confusing/infuriating.

Rant (with spoilers):

1. Kate is literally the one who figures out Olathe and where she was, and then she sacrificed herself to save the Pack to such a degree that Mahon literally says “You have earned the trust and friendship of the Pack. You may visit when you wish. You may ask us for help in a time of need, and we’ll do our best to aid you.”

BUT IN THE SAME CHAPTER, when Kate (rightfully) says there are things that don’t add up, Curran accuses her of just being sad she’s no longer in the spotlight??? What the fuck?

2. When the Pack finally does believe her and they come to the conclusion about the upir, Kate mentions Crest as a possibility. However, she is VERY CLEAR that she doesn’t 100% believe that it’s Crest. Curran is the one who goes all gung-ho for testing him.  When Crest tests clean, Curran says “Do me a favor, next time you get a hunch, don’t tell me.”

Again, what the fuck??? She’s the one who knew it was more than just Olathe, she’s the one who said “oh there are things that maybe point to it not being Crest”, she’s the one who literally sacrificed herself for the Pack. Curran is the one who went balls-to-the-wall for the first suspect, and now he wants to act like she betrayed them with her guess???

Even more confusing is that she acts like Curran has a point! She believes it’s all on her too, to the point that she goes and gets drunk to “make her body feel as bad as her mind” after “piss[ing] away whatever meager credibility [she]’d had with the Pack”.  Huh???

Not to mention that she feels so bad for betraying Crest and that their relationship is ruined. Girl, you spent the entire last date with him complaining about how much you didn’t want to date him and how different you are!! I get feeling cruddy for accusing a rando of being a monster, but don’t act all heartbroken or hurt over a guy you didn’t even like that much.

To be honest I expected to love this more than I did. I only picked this up because I wanted a good romance and thought reading an urban fantasy/paranormal romance would change things up for me since I typically read contemporary romance.

I don't think I liked the writing style very much. It was odd. But, it was a quick read and I am interested in seeing how Kate and the love interest get together so I'm going to continue on with the series in hopes that I enjoy it more.

The graphic audio may have brought my rating down a touch, as some of the background gasps, groans, and such were overdone. I'm also not used to this format, so I was paying as much attention to the production as I was to the story. I'll try the regular audio for the next one, because I am interested in where the story goes. I'd recommend it to someone who liked the Dresden Files and enjoys a bad ass female main character, and can overlook mid-2000s gender politics.
