I truly had a wonderful time reading this book - the start was a little slow but it was worth sticking with, because once the story got going it became a truly wonderful adventure. My only problem is that I think the story needed just a few more chapters, or at least one - it ended just as I wanted it to, but I really wanted to see a little glimpse beyond the ending, to have a few more questions answered. I think that would have been a lot more satisfying as a whole.

That being said, I love the characters and thought the various twists were interesting and well done. It gets quite dark in places, never overwhelmingly so. All in all, fun and exciting. A lovely read!

Really great read. I really liked the first two parts of the book. I especially loved the first part and how the author handled it. The last part of the book was a tad bit confusing to me, but overall a really good read, and I really enjoyed the ending.

i adored this book more than i can say. the romance was beautiful and the writing  gorgeous. the premise was really interesting, i’m not sure i can ever read another book without thinking of the lore of this one lol. i loved lucian and emmett so much, they felt very believable and had good development in my opinion. i also found the setting really intriguing - it almost had a more sinister, slightly less overtly pastoral thomas hardy feel at times. how beautifully written it is really stands out to me;
not reallyyyyy a spoiler but there is a passage after lucian and emmett get together where bridget collins describes their summer together before alta forgives lucian and it was entrancing. i’ve thought about it so much since reading it
the only reason it’s not 5 stars is because i found part one a little slow. i just fell in love with this book and it’s characters, truly enjoyed it so much. one of the lovelier books i’ve read recently <3

I hesitated between two and three stars for this one, because even though the premise was really interesting, the story didn't feel engaging at all to me, and reading it eventually became an unpleasant chore. I disliked both Emmett and Lucian, despised Lucian's father and de Havilland, and didn't actually enjoy reading about ANY of the characters with the exception of Seredith, who died very early on. There was way too little about the actual binding and way too much endless angsting. Plus everybody was constantly freezing to death, which for some reason annoyed me immensely.

This book just wasn't a good match for me.

I loved this book. I read most of it all in one day. It’s such an interesting concept of what books and stories are, while being intense, moving, and generally an absorbing tale. Loved it loved it loved it.
