A melancholic biography. Honestly, I think anyone can relate to alienation but to the extent he had it was absurdly nihilistic.

Bleak, melancholic, and heartbreaking yet charming, refreshing and tnough-provoking. There's something deeply moving and freeing about reading Yoza's unfiltered thoughts. For someone that felt alienated from the world around him, Dazai is able to make you empathize with the narrator (and himself) completely, without resorting to any sentimentalities. Maybe feeling so isolated to the point of believing you are no longer human is the most deeply human experience of them all.

i expected to like this more than i did... the book (or maybe yozo himself) lost it's charm in the second half.
there were a couple paragraphs that had me like "this is what i'm here for!!" but these were far and few between. it's only so fun to watch someone continue to spiral out of control. after a while, you get sick of yozo's shenanigans.
as the madam succinctly put, "No, I didn't cry... I just kept thinking that when human beings get that way, they're no good for anything."
i might read this again with a newer translation but for now im underwhelmed.
