Once again, the metaphor man is in fill swing. Moores descriptive writing brings the book to life and keeps the novel light with humour and quite the imagination.
Always a fun time reading one of Christopher Moore's books. Funny laugh out loud moments and a break from reality!
He's no Pinkwater, and the story reads like a Tom Robbins novel minus the wordplay and florid prose, but it's not bad.

Something interesting has happened to this book in the 25ish years since publication.
Time. Time has happened. And it's not funny anymore. You can see, if you were around back then, the spaces where funny was supposed to go- the once stock ideas and characters that were supposed to do nothing but titillate and amuse.
This happens a lot of course, we say things "didn't age well" and there's definitely a decent dollop of that here, but mostly it has matured into something else, something more interesting, something more… melancholy.
I liked it quite a lot, it was in parts well written, he's got a good descriptive sense, but once I figured out why the breathless quotes and cartoon cover weren't gelling with what I was reading I found myself wishing it was written straight from the start, or was more modern or something, I don't know, but the shape of it is not quite right. Like a piece of clothing that has been ironed with the corners in the wrong places.
A film/TV adaptation would be excellent, I think modern audiences would really take to it, but I assume nobody's lining up to buy the rights.
