XXX Holic, Vol.1

CLAMP

4.06 AVERAGE

I just couldn't get into this. It seemed like a waste of my time.

Ok I really really liked the concept for this series like a lot. I’ve put the next few volumes on hold at the library and I don’t want to jump the gun but really think this could be a 5 star series. Cannot wait to read more.
funny mysterious slow-paced
Loveable characters: Yes

I loved xxxHOLiC as a kid, and I saw they recently made a movie version, so I decided to check it out again. The art is so elegant and gorgeous!

I've read several volumes of this manga series.

The art is as gorgeous inside as on the cover--some of CLAMP's best and that's saying a lot. The story is fun with some interesting psychological bits and mysterious undercurrents along with the supernatural phenomena and humor.

The mistress of the shop, Yuki, takes great pleasure in confusing, teasing and sometimes overworking poor Watanuki.
Starting in vol. 2, he has many annoying (and amusing!) encounters with his classmate and nemesis, Doumeki, who is more popular and cooler than he is and who seems to be a romantic rival of Watanuki as well. They have one of those humorous mutual-annoyance relationships common among teenage boys in manga and in general.

Oh--the main plots of the story. Yuki runs a shop where she sells people things and situations they desire--at a price. Watanuki is her errand boy for many deliveries of magical objects, as well as a participant in various supernatural adventures.

I read this series as it came out, so this is a reread for me. But UGHHHH I forgot just how much I loved Yuko and Watanuki. Also the easter eggs for their other series are amazing.

Quite an interesting manga about the cycle of addiction. You witness it through the eyes of several different characters.

For instance: A liar and a computer addict.

Actual rating: 3.5 stars

xxxHolic was the first anime I ever watched, and I really enjoyed it! I've read the manga on and off for a few years now, but so much of it is reliant on the overarching Clamp universe that it can be somewhat difficult to read when you're as little versed in the rest of the stories as I am.
The self contained stories are super interesting, though, and very steeped in Japanese mythology. Really interesting stuff to read.

I'm revisiting my favorite manga series... The first volume doesn't quite get off the ground, but it only goes up from here.

It's been some time since I've read xxxHolic. I forgot how much I love this series. I originally discovered this series in high school, much like many other mangas that I've read previously.

I'd like to say, firstly, that my rating of this volume is actually 4.5 stars.

I love the artwork. It's mystical but simple, and I love so many of the character designs. The mysterious name of the series itself, as well as the first volume's cover art, was what roped me in in the first place, all those years ago. The chapter covers within are even more gorgeous. My favorites were those for chapters four through seven, especially.

I always wondered exactly which of the CLAMP artists draw this series specifically. I still do. If anyone can enlighten me, that would be awesome!

I also really love the characters themselves. Maru and Moro are annoyingly cute, Watanuki is funny without trying to be. Yûko is just fantastic. Himawari is adorable as well. I feel bad for Watanuki, though. He just unknowingly gets sucked into Yûko's trap, then gets to play the maid. Though, I gotta hand it to Yûko; she sure knows how to play the game.

(Side Bar: How do I manage to keep running into mangas with the same elements in them? Characters falling through various items into other eras, characters who can see demons/ghosts. Maybe I need to pick mangas with girlier covers.)

I like the storyline, as well. It's progression is perfect, and yet always maintaining the mystery. One thing that I never really did before, though, is read both xxxHolic and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle together at the same time. Not properly, anyway. I always loved the thought of the two series crossing over. I always said I was going to read them together, but never did.

However, I DO plan on doing so now.

Even if it takes me forever to do so by getting the volumes through the library. I will do it.

This series also speaks a little bit to life situations as well. Yûko might appear to be an irresponsible mess, but she has some real words of wisdom sometimes. Hands down, she's my absolute favorite character in this series. She always has been. I'm not really sure why. I just love her.

The direction of the story is still pretty vague in this volume. It's difficult to tell exactly where our characters are going, other than for Watanuki to work to pay off the price of his wish.

I hate it when a volume ends with the introduction of a new character. I mean, yes, I already know who they are, but I've always hated this. Either introduce your characters fully before the volume ends, or wait until the next volume to introduce them.

Otherwise, I'd have to say that I'm happy with this volume. A solid four and a half stars. I'm definitely planning on reading this series with Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. I'd like to finally see what the whole story looks like, from both sides.

For now, I've got more mangas from the library to read.
