So this concludes my reading of the Death Note series... What a ride!
This edition had volume 11 & 12, which, obviously, are the final two volumes of the series... And oh boy, was it a mindfuck. It had twists and turns galore. Everyone thinking they had the one up, only to discover they don't, but then it was revealed it really was the way they planned it... It was like a game of tennis, that will give you whiplash.
Light got what he deserved. Misa deserved better. Near gives you headaches with his smarts. Ryuk was badass and deserves all the apples. Matsuda is still sweet angel baby.
The series as a whole did not disappoint, I loved devouring it very much. I'm definitely gonna rewatch the anime asap.

This review is for the whole series.
I've loved this series for years. Long long ago I've read it and now I finally collected all the volumes and read them. The first 3 and a half volumes are amazing. The author's brain is amazing for creating the mental game between two geniuses. This series will forever hold a special place in my heart. But the last 2 and a half volumes felt more like a side story and were less interesting.

What a finale showdown. I was not disappointed.

This story is very, very long. I don’t really think it needed to be?
Anyway, this concludes the Death Note saga. The ending was overdramatic to the point that it dipped into melodrama for me. The continuously long, extremely overly detailed breakdowns continue and my eyes glazed over quite a bit. While I’m relieved Light was caught in the end, it just reminded me how unnecessarily complicated this plot was.
I get having 2 death notes, but when it increased beyond that it just became unnecessarily complicated with more and more rules being created to explain how Light & Misa were able to continue acting as Kira with pawns that just kept increasing in number. This story would’ve been a lot more succinct if they’d trimmed the need for the business man subplot & chasing Mello.
I hated that every female character was just a pawn. I also hated that they’re were dumbed down to the point that I was surprised they were able to walk and talk at the same time. The women were written so poorly that I wondered if some woman broke the author’s heart when he was a kid & he just never got over it because here were 2 female characters that existed just to be in love with a complete dick like Light & willing to risk their lives to help him. It was sad to watch, to be honest. Sayu wasn’t any better to be honest.
Anyway, it was interesting to read. I feel like the anime probably trimmed a lot of the unnecessary bits to make a more succinct story and I’ll have to check it out someday.

Remains a complicated mess but what a hell of an official ending.
